  • Which OT do you prefer, NFL or college?

Forgive me if this question has been asked before, but I was curious. I especially wanted the answer from college football fans.

Simply, which OT do you like better?

As for myself, I like the NFL's version of overtime better.

NFL. It irks me when people complain about the NFL OT system because it's "unfair" that the other team's offense doesn't get a chance. That's ridiculous. Defense is just as important to the game as Offense is. You have to play both sides successfully if you want to win the game.

I greatly enjoy the college version over the NFL version. The NFL's version leaves one team without an opportunity in overtime, which hardly seems fair when such a hardfought battle is on the line.

The college version gives each team an opportunity to answer the bell, and it adds a dynamic that is not part of the regular game with each team getting the ball in scoring position. I love it!

Agree. College OT seems gimmicky to me. It favors the offense way too much.

both teams should get a chance, however it should be on a kickoff like the NFL.

College overtimes make the game more exciting.

NFL overtimes are like gain enough yards for a field goal. Booring.

I agree with that. But since college starts off at the opponent's 25 (which I hate), I like the NFL's version of overtime more.

I think OT system works well for college However I dont want it in the NFL though .....

If 4Q of play is not enough to decide who the better team was on that day ...Next team that scores wins ...

I said college simply because it gives each team an opportunity with the ball. I think the NFL should change their OT, but not exactly like the college method. Here's what I think they should do:

Each team is guaranteed one offensive possession. If a team has a turnover on their possession, even after one play, that counts as their possession. If one team has scored more than the other after each team's possession, the game is over. If the score is still tied after each team's possession it becomes sudden death.

nobody on the planet would have an issue with the nfl ot if they kept the same rules but made one small change...

no coin flip...the home team automatically gets first possession

it would make the end of regulation more fun too...if the road team is down 3 they'll be more likely to try and win the game as opposed to playing it safe and kicking a fg to tie

The college method is defiantly more exciting, but I don't like that they take special teams (kickoffs, kick return and the punt teams) almost entirely out of the equation. I think that each team should get a chance to match the other teams score even if they just have a fifth timed period for instance.
if man is 5 and jay cutler is 6 then that must make john elway 7

Well, if it's our defense against Raiders offense, I have no problems. Anyway, I prefer the NFL system. Don't like the flip of the coin? Then you should have beaten the other team before the end of regulation.

                            Combo...

Both teams get a chance but should have to kickoff.

But out of the two options? College, because a lucky play like a DB slipping on
a pass or even on the kickoff coverage can make a team lose with a chance
                            to do much else.

                              college

From the 2000 through 2007 regular seasons, there have been 124 overtime games. In every single game except one (I believe), the team that won the toss elected to receive. And those receiving teams won 60% of the time (and tied once). That's a relatively large advantage, particularly when compared to home field advantage.
