how many caught his eye gouging he did on sat? It doesnt look to me like he was going for the ball or anything. Im a little incredulous as to why he did it. I think this is just as serious offense as the oregon punch. Why he's only suspended a half is beyond me. what are your thoughts?

It's what happens in the pile.

I'll admit I'm some what biased being a Florida fan but he should be punished for that since he obviously got caught trying to get a cheap shot on a defenseless player. Not suspended from the team like the Oregon running back who sucker punched a Boise State player. The Oregon running back had a history of getting into trouble because of his temper or his attitude. Spikes probably got caught up in the emotion of the game and moment when on two different occasions his helmet was knocked off or pulled off and a Georgia player caught him up around his head. Not saying the Georgia linemen that hit him were trying to cheap shot him. What Spikes did also happens a lot when there is a big pile like that. I've heard punches, kicks, twisting joints, and even biting goes on in the pit.

seriously though half a game? Thats almost the equivalent of fining an nfler
2k. When I played i got caught up in emotions all the time but i would channel that into the game and hit the guy harder next time. While there was a semi scrum going on this isnt rugby. It was guttless and tactless not to mention totally unprofessional. Should this ruin his career...absolutely not but half a game is pretty ridiculous

Obviously I'm a Gator fan, and I was shocked to see that Spikes did that when I re-watched the game this morning. I hope he learns his lesson because actions like that should never take place. I'm glad to see he is being punished for it.

I see a couple differences between the Spikes situation and the Oregon situation. First, the Oregon running back threw a PUNCH... AFTER the game, not in the middle of a game. Second, the Oregon player attempted to jump into the crowd and fight fans.

What Spikes did was completely wrong and I never want to see that, no matter who the teams are. I hate to see players throw cheap shots or try to injure another player. Just shouldn't be part of the game in my oppinion. I especially hate to see it from my team.

Can you honestly say that being suspended for the 1st half of their next game is being punished? This suspension isn't even a slap on the wrist. We all think was Spikes did was wrong, but suspending him for one half? Come on.

I don't understand people's sense of right and wrong. Dez Bryant lies about something that he thought was wrong and he gets suspended a whole year. Spikes tries to blind someone, and can't play for one half against a team they should totally destroy? Are you serious? I would wager that if they were playing someone better (Alabama, LSU, etc.), he wouldn't have gotten suspended at all.

The punishment is laughable. SEC coaches get worse sanctions when they complain about the officiating. Florida gets a pass because they're Florida. It's really that simple.

I agree with you all to a degree, yet agree more with Ohio Broncos.

What he did was intentional and malicious. Emotions or not, he was trying to hurt the Georgia player. He needs to be punished much more then half a game against a lesser opponent. And then you look at the balance of justice with Dez getting the season off for lying to officials? Who was that blinding or intentionally hurting? No one!!

              Ealey: Spikes shouldn't be suspended

ATHENS, Ga. -- A most unlikely person came to the defense of Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes, who was suspended for half a game for apparently trying to gouge the eyes of Georgia running back Washaun Ealey.

Ealey said Tuesday he doesn't believe Spikes should have been suspended.

In fact, Ealey seemed surprised the play from Saturday's game drew so much attention.

Florida coach Urban Meyer on Monday suspended Spikes for the first half of this week's game against Vanderbilt after the defensive captain stuck his hand in Ealey's helmet and appeared to try to stick his fingers in Ealey's eyes.

Ealey says he doesn't agree with those who have said the suspension was not stiff enough.

"That really didn't matter to me," Ealey said of the suspension. "That's their decision. He shouldn't, I think, get suspended at all. We were just out there playing football."
Ealey said he had his eyes closed when Spikes stuck his hand in his helmet and he wasn't hurt.

"He really didn't gouge my eyes," Ealey said. "He really didn't get a chance to get close to my eyes."

The freshman said he believes similar incidents happen all the time.

"I'm pretty sure it goes on back and forth," he said. "We probably do it and other teams do too. It's all football. We're just out there trying to have fun."

Top-ranked Florida beat Georgia 41-17. The Bulldogs play Tennessee Tech on Saturday.

On Monday, Spikes issued an apology.

"I accept responsibility for my actions and I accept the consequences of my actions," Spikes said. "I would like to apologize to my team and the coaching staff and Washaun Ealey. Football is a very physical and emotional game, but there is no excuse for my actions."

The Southeastern Conference issued a statement on Monday saying it reviewed and accepted the discipline handed down by Florida.

Meyer said he believed Spikes retaliated after getting his helmet ripped off and eye poked earlier in the game.

Georgia coach Mark Richt said Spikes' "helmet went flying off ... and there was one time he got hit with his helmet off."

"It was totally unintentional," Richt said. "They were totally just playing ball. That might have got him bent out of shape. I don't know about all of that."

Ealey carried 17 times for 70 yards against the Gators.

"It was just a lot of emotion in the game," he said. "We were out there fighting. It was a big rivalry game. Everybody was just out there talking trash back and forth. ... We were just out there playing football and having fun."

Wow even Ealey doesn't think it was as big of a deal as people are making it out to be, and that's coming from a bitter rival. I'd say he didn't get a lighter punishment because he's from Florida, I'd say he's getting so much attention because he's from Florida. Just a little food for thought.
