FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State and Boise State won't play as members of the Mountain West Conference until 2012, but the two schools will maintain a great college football rivalry with a non-conference game at Bulldog Stadium on Oct. 8, 2011. The schools have met as WAC members since 2001.
Director of Athletics Thomas Boeh announced the game on Monday.
"We are very pleased and excited to be able to preserve this rivalry game with Boise State during our transition to the Mountain West Conference," said Boeh. "We remain dedicated to providing Fresno State fans with the very best possible home football schedule and this announcement is indicative of that commitment. We also have great respect for Boise State's athletics program and this agreement is reflective of the collegial nature of our relationship."
The Broncos are currently ranked No. 2 in the AP poll and No. 4 in the BCS rankings. Fresno State plays at Boise State Nov. 19. In addition, Boise State will host Nevada in a non-conference game. Boise State will move to the Mountain West Conference beginning July 1, 2011 while Fresno State and Nevada are scheduled to join the MWC one year later.
In addition to Boise State, Fresno State's 2011 non-conference schedule includes a home game against North Dakota on Sept. 17 and the Dogs will host Ole Miss on Oct. 1, one week before hosting the Broncos. Fresno State has never hosted a team from the Southeastern Conference before.
"We have great respect for Boise State and what they have accomplished over the years and we always look forward to playing them," said head coach Pat Hill. "Having them come to Bulldog Stadium next year as a non-conference opponent shows the respect we have for one another."
Fresno State is scheduled to play at Nebraska, currently No. 7 in the BCS rankings, on Sept. 10, 2011. The Dogs were scheduled to play at Colorado next season, but that series has been pushed back one year because of scheduling conflicts with Colorado's move to the Pac-10. The Buffs and Bulldogs will begin that series at Bulldog Stadium in 2012.
Fresno State's 2011 WAC schedule will include home games against San Jose State, La Tech and Utah State with road games at Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico State and Idaho.
