i think today's goings on with good ole' Mr. Gee and his comments and our president's retaliation makes a strong case against BCS schools.
it is true though... most BCS schools make sure they have mostly or all cup-cake teams on their OOC schedules (and frankly even in-conference some of the teams aren't up to par).
in our case, we cannot control our conference schedule (which sucks, save for Nevada, Fresno and Hawaii [all three of which are like see-saws]), however we go out of our way to try to schedule the toughest OOC schedules that we can. it's not our fault they don't want to play us. We've attempted to schedule Florida etc. but no dice. Florida won't go out of state to play anyone out of the conference.
take VT this year for example. they agreed, but didn't want to play us at Lane Stadium so they chose a "neutral" site. good thing because they sort of saved themselves the embarrassment of losing at home (i think this is the real reason teams won't play us). even still, VT's own stadium, which houses over 82k and is supposed to be one of the toughest places to play in college football wasn't good enough? if they have such good homefield advantage, why did they have to transplant 80k fans to a neutral location where there were still 10k BSU fans? to make it more "fair?" lol it basically was a home game because of all the VT fans.
anyway... i dunno where i was going with that as i'm distracted by Conan O'Brien. oh, right: basically they're afraid to play us at their houses, and don't want to come to the blue turf for whatever reason. money? please, that's a tired argument. it's less embarrassing to lose away than it is at home. i mean people talk about how Boise State wouldn't help a BCS team's strength of schedule, so why would they want to schedule them?
well... you can't sit here and convince me that Ohio, Eastern Michigan, Marshall or even of late Purdue or Illinois (in conference) help OSU's S.o.S.
let's look at last year: Toledo (don't recall hearing anyone give OSU flak for playing a team we played this season), Navy, New Mexico State (oh so that's weird, they will schedule WAC teams but not BSU? hmmm).
2008: this one is awesome. Youngstown State? Ohio again... TROY? come on guys... and they lost to the two top 5 teams they played that year.
let's move on to someone else, maybe Alabama.
they have no problem scheduling a WAC team either, because they invited San Jose State to play. Georgia State, that's a really S.o.S. booster. Duke, though a BCS team has no business being one period.
last year: Florida International, Chattanooga, North Texas.
let's look at Florida, a team we attempted to play: Miami (OH) (hey we've played them before...no problem), South Florida, Appalachian State (surprised they scheduled a team that upset BCS mogul Michigan).
last year: they started the year with TWO cup-cake games, Charleston Southern and Troy and then Florida International.
2008: oh look, Florida actually doesn't mind playing the WAC either, as they scheduled Hawaii (so they made Hawaii travel all the way across the ocean AND country. then we have Citadel.
(don't worry, i'm going someplace with all this).
now lets look at 2006, the year we first and finally busted the BCS, and everyone was outraged.
Florida's (who beat OSU in the NC that year) OOC Schedule: Southern Miss, UCF, Western Carolina. Florida likes to start off easy with two easy games it appears. Makes sense.
Alabama: oh look... Alabama seems to like the WAC because they played Hawaii. then we've got Louisiana-Monroe and Florida International (looks like 'Bama sucked in '06).
Ohio State: Northern Illinois, Bowling Green (only two, but it should be noted, and this is important, that OSU played ZERO ranked teams in 2006 and yet somehow made it into the National Championship Game over undefeated Boise State that year, then got their asses handed to them by Florida).
Boise State: Oregon State, Sacramento State, Utah, Wyoming. So we have one cup-cake OOC team, and the other three are one BCS team and two from a conference considered tougher than the WAC. Sure we have one BCS team here, but the point is, we TRY to schedule BCS teams and they refuse. Thus we are always stuck with one or two a season.
how can 'Bama, Florida and OSU claim that the WAC is weak and wouldn't help their schedules to play Boise State and yet they schedule WAC teams all the time. there is nothing wrong with wanting a home and home agreement. that means for us we get the chance to play a BCS team twice and for the BCS team the opportunity to play someone "easy" (in their eyes) twice.
Kustra would schedule every OOC game against a BCS opponent if he could find four that had the balls to play us.
some might say: "well our schedules are tough week in and week out, why not schedule easy OOC teams?" to that i say: "because you always argue that playing Boise State doesn't help your S.o.S. and yet your team has no problem scheduling teams far inferior to Boise State. double standard much?
