  • Boise State on probation for 3 years by NCAA

The NCAA placed Boise State on probation for three years and imposed other sanctions Tuesday for major violations by the football program and other sports.

The sanctions included a public reprimand, a one-year postseason ban for women's tennis and recruiting restrictions and scholarship reductions. Some of the penalties had previously been self-imposed by the university.

Boise State's football program will be able to offer three fewer scholarships each year, from 85 to 82, through the 2013-14 season. The football team will also be allowed fewer contact practices during spring training for three years.

Gregory Sankey, associate commissioner of the Southeastern Conference and a member of the NCAA Committee on Infractions, said the committee opted to go beyond the penalties that Boise State imposed on itself because the violations took place over multiple years.

The sanctions follow an NCAA inquiry that found a lack of institutional controls necessary for Boise State to fully comply with rules governing collegiate athletic programs.

The NCAA says the case included numerous major violations involving more than 75 prospects and student-athletes in five sports.

Among the violations: From 2005 through 2009, football staff members arranged inadmissible summer housing and transportation for 63 prospective student-athletes.

In 2008-09, Boise State allowed a women's tennis player to practice, play and receive travel expenses after her fourth season of competition.

got off easy, not a biggy at all.

why? It's not that bad of a call...

they made a mistake... a mistake that ended up getting the AD fired... and the NCAA punished them. It was a fair punishment.

        I'm pro-boise and I approve this message

but yeah go boise for now... until we play you

I don't see how this will even affect Boise St. at all. They just produce year in and year out.

Boy, the NCAA is really digging, Lol. That's what fear does.

This would matter if Boise was in the SEC or some other big conference.

people , and society as a whole, are so busy making excuses for these turds who break the rules, that they don't spend time on changing those rules, rather they spend all their time *****ing and moaning when one of their "favorites" gets legitimately sanctioned/popped

i saw the same BS regurgitating out of the mouths of USC fans when they got spanked

take your punishment like a man, don't cry about it.....

The major violations were with the tennis program, and it was definitely worthy of punishment.

However, are you aware of what the football violations were? I honestly wouldn't have known it was a violation.

Upperclassmen would allow incoming freshmen to stay with them during the summer so they could participate in the summer football program. They would also give them rides to practice and help them out with meals. That's where the "illegal benefits for housing, transportation, and meals" came from.

I thought it was petty myself. The unfortunate thing is people are not really familiar with the story and are just assuming the majority of the trouble was the football program. This whole thing stemmed from improper activity by the tennis program and a disgrungled assistant tennis coach. She was unhappy with they way she was being treated by the athletic department so she started going after the football team too.

                      Rules are rules.

I'm glad the NCAA didn't fine us for what ESPN and Yahoo considered huge violations... some of our athletes abused the food stamp system... OH NOES!!

thats the gov't's issue, not ncaa.

                      and they acted as such.

That's a perfect example of how goofed up the NCAA is. One group breaks the law and has no punishment. Another group is punished for being hospitable.

Maybe Boise boosters should just start offering hundreds of thousands of dollars to new recruits parents and tell them to just tell their kids they don't know about it.

lol, the difference is that the school had no involvement in it. They got the benefits for being members of the community, not being members of the team.

You're acting like they aren't punishing other schools... You guys got off easy compared to other schools. Nobody is against boise... not even the BCS... but it is set up so teams LIKE boise don't get far.

                          EVERYONES AGAINST US!!! lol...

it's not the end of the world.

rules are rules, like 12and4 says

now if the parties involved somehow weren't given the set of rules, in which they broke, then you've got a case

but if they were privy to said rules and they're going to instead claim ignorance, that is on them!

if you have a manual, and you don't read it, and it has a rule in it you just broke, guess what, that is on YOU!
