  • Boise rumored exit fee... 21... MILLION

Boise State could owe as much as $21 million if it decides to change conferences for next season, the Mountain West confirmed Thursday. The Albuquerque Journal first reported the exit fees.

Here's how it works (and all numbers are approximate):

    — If Boise State reaches a BCS game this season, its year-end revenue distribution from the Mountain West would be roughly $7 million. According to the Mountain West's exit fee clause, the Broncos would forfeit that amount AND the greater of $5 million OR double the year-end distribution ($14 million).

That's how you get to $21 million.

    — If Boise State did not make a BCS game this season, the Broncos would forfeit their year-end distribution (around $1.9 million) AND the greater of $5 million OR double the year-end distribution ($3.8 million).

In that case, it would be $1.9 million plus $5 million for a total of $6.9 million.

    — If Boise State were to give a year's notice (and leave for 2013), the Broncos would only forfeit their year-end distribution from the 2012-13 academic calendar.

Here is the Mountain West bylaw regarding exit fees that was passed in June and voted on by Boise State. The Mountain West added the exit fee after Utah, BYU and TCU left without penalty.

"Effective June 6, 2011 and thereafter any notice of resignation given by any member shall be subject to the notice dates referenced in subparagraph (a) above and the following: (a) the resigning member shall forfeit its final year of revenue payable no later than the Effective Date; (b) if the resigning member gives notice after the established “Notice Date”, the resigning member shall forfeit its final year of revenue and shall pay to the Conference a sum of five million dollars ($5,000,000) OR double the amount of the final year’s revenue, whichever is greater. All monies shall be paid no later than the Notice Date. (Revised June 2011)

i think you make more threads about Boise than i do.

but anyway... it's ridiculous. i don't feel like they ought to be able to withhold a potential paycheck that we would earn. not to mention if we make it to a BCS game we would be making the Mountain West all that money and only get a portion of it.

(of course i know how it works and it's not fair blah blah blah)

but also it wouldn't really be that we would have to pay $21 million because they would just not give us the BCS check etc. so it's more of a withholding of funds than demanding payment.

I think the exit penalties are more than fair. Teams benefit financially from their conference agreement, and if they want to leave those contractual agreements they should be punished if they don't want to do it with proper notice given.

I think we should just wait until 2013 to join the Big East. We're rebuilding next year anyway. We'll be starting a new QB and an entirely new defensive line...no more George Iloka.

Giving up the $7 million in profit this year would be nuts. We need it for stadium expansion. Boise has too small of an athletic budget to be giving that kind of money up. That's about 1\6 of the whole athletic budget.

I'm to the point where I'm wondering (and hoping) if the MWC will pay WYO to leave and join the Big Sky.

ESPN’s John Clayton reported that McKenzie is expected to review Jackson’s performance for the next week or so. Clayton reports that the odds favor Jackson staying in Oakland, but a decision has not been made. "I still get the feeling Jackson will end up being retained." 3 1/2 HOURS LATER, THE RAIDERS FIRED JACKSON.....GOOD CALL CLAYTON

Why would they do that when there are at least 3 teams in the conference worse than them?

Because those 3 worse teams bring good basketball programs, and were original founders of the MWC. They wouldnt get kicked out, and neither would WYO.

people that think all the conference re-alignment has anything to do with anything other than football make me laugh.

It's just tough to recruit at Wyoming. Nothing to do in town, except head to the Ranger or the Alibi. But you have to be 21 of course.

If you don't like big city life (Laramie, pop. 28,000), and playing in front of 25,000, then 20,000 and finally 15,000 (hunting season starts late Oct/early Nov) fans, then I guess Wyoming's for you.

Facilities pale in comparison to most schools, except the aforementioned Big Sky conference.

I wish that WYO could keep a consistent program, but there are too many obstacles in place for it to happen.

And buy a huge RV with all the trimmings to tailgate with my fellow Broncoholics. Heck, I'd even provide the food and beer.
