    PSU Planning Joe Paterno’s Exit

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — According to two people briefed on conversations among the university’s top officials, Joe Paterno’s tenure as coach of the Penn State football team will soon be overwithin days or weeks, in the wake of a sex-abuse scandal that has implicated university officials.

The board of trustees has yet to determine the precise timing of Paterno’s exit, but it is clear that Paterno, who has more victories than any other coach at college football’s top level and who made Penn State a prestigious national brand, will not coach another season. Discussions about how to manage his departure have begun, according to the two people.

Paterno was to have held a news conference Tuesday but the university canceled it less than an hour before it was scheduled to start.

Joe Paterno’s tenure as coach of the Penn State football team will soon be over in the wake of a sex-abuse scandal that has implicated university officials, according to people briefed on the matter.

    Good.

How was this not dealt with when it happened?

If this were a girl getting RAPED by a grown man in the Penn State locker room, what would outcome be?

This reeks of coverup, and everyone involved with this program right now ought to be ASHAMED of themselves.

I feel bad. Not because nothing should've happened, but because it's a shame that this is how Paterno's career will end.

Apparently the former DA of Centre County (the county of which PSU is in) was brought to light about allegations against Sandusky some years ago, I think it was in the early 00's.

The former DA failed to look into it that much and did not file any charges or anything against Sandusky.

That former DA is Roy Gricar. For those unaware of who Roy Gricar is/was, he disappeared on April 15, 2005, the day right before he was to retire from being DA of Centre County. His laptop without the harddrive was found in a river and then 2 months later, the harddrive was found in the same river about 100 yards from where the laptop was found.

The harddrive was sent to NASA and NASA was unable to get anything off the harddrive because it was so badly corroded and damaged.

Gricar's vehicle was found by an antique shop near the river (right before the laptop was found) and did not hold any phyical evidence and was cleaned spotless inside and out. The only thing found in the car was Gricar's state issued cell phone and a single (what appeared to be) cigarette ash. Gricar was not a smoker and never smoked in his life.

Searches done on Gricar's home computer revealed that Gricar did searches on "how to destroy/fry a harddrive" as well as "water damage to a notebook computer"

Gricar has never been seen since the day he disappeared and was legally declared dead in July of this year.

My bad, it was 1998 that Gricar was informed of the Sandusky allegations. The following is what I found about the situation...

In 1998, Gricar declined to press charges against longtime Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky following allegations of sexual abuse; years later, Sandusky was arrested and charged by the Pennsylvania Attorney General's office for his role in the Penn State sex abuse scandal. In 2004, Gricar announced he would not run for re-election and would retire from both the DA job and as a practicing attorney in December 2005, shortly after his 60th birthday.

Another kicker is that Gricar's ex wife worked at PSU at the time when Gricar first heard of the allegations!

I cant really describe how I feel towards this but I don't feel bad for him or any of the people involved. I feel the most for the victims who had to endure the abuse becuase it seems that winning football games is more important than someone safety and well being.

Paterno reportedly was informed about the sexual acts that Sandusky took part in with underage boys and failed to report it to law enforcement.

                            This guy

allegedly molested 8 young boys over a 15 year period. He retired from coaching in 1999, but retained access to the workout facilities and such.

                            This guy

testified to walked in on a ten-year-old boy being subjected to anal intercourse by the other guy, in 2002. Jealousy, as evidenced by the above stance, overtook him (j/k), so he evidently reported this to

                            this guy

He in turn told the athletic director and some other guy about the incident, perhaps in hopes that they would report it to the police.

The incident never was reported by the two men. Instead they just made a deal that he couldn't bring little boys with him to the ficilities. So now the molestor is in deep **** obviously, as are the two guys (AD and other guy) who didn't report the incident to the police.

Jo Pa is under heat because many believe that he should have reported it to the police instead of reporting it to his superiors. But here is what Pennsylvania law says should happen under such circumstances:

"that person shall immediately notify the person in charge of the institution, school, facility or agency or the designated agent of the person in charge. Upon notification, the person in charge or the designated agent, if any, shall assume the responsibility and have the legal obligation to report or cause a report to be made in accordance with section 6313"

So as far as the law goes, Paterno did exactly what the government says to do. Legally, he is right. Morally? That's where it gets interesting. For the time being, i'm going to give Jo Pa the benefit of the doubt and say that he had trust that when he reported teh incident to his superiors that they would deal with it the right way. He's only the head football coach after all. Quite frankly, the verdict is still out on Paterno because we don't know what he was told or what he told the two dudes. I 100% believe that he should've contacted the police immediately though.

Regardless, it's time for Penn State to clean house. Dispicable situation throughout. Jo Paterno is the least guilty of all of the people involved, but he still did the wrong thing. Graham Spanier is who we should really be talking about.

Questions on Sandusky Allegations Wrapped in 2005 Gricar Mystery

One of the questions surrounding the sex-abuse case against Jerry Sandusky is why a former district attorney chose not to prosecute the then-Penn State assistant coach in 1998 after reports surfaced that he had inappropriate interactions with a boy.

The answer is unknowable because of an unsolved mystery: What happened to Ray Gricar, the Centre County, Pa., district attorney?

Gricar went missing in April 2005. The murky circumstances surrounding his disappearance — an abandoned car, a laptop recovered months later in a river without a hard drive, his body was never found — have spawned Web sites, television programs and conspiracy theories. More than six years later, the police still receive tips and reports of sightings. The police in central Pennsylvania continue to investigate even though Gricar’s daughter, Lara, successfully petitioned in July to have her father declared legally dead so the family could find some closure and begin dividing his estate.

Yet as the Sandusky investigation moves forward, questions will be asked anew about why Gricar did not pursue charges against him 13 years ago. A small but strident minority believes Gricar did not want to tackle a case that involved a hometown icon. Others who knew and worked with Gricar say he was a meticulous, independent and tough-minded prosecutor who was unbowed by Penn State, its football program and political pressure in general.

“No one got a bye with Ray,” said Anthony De Boef, who worked as an assistant district attorney under Gricar for five years. “He didn’t care who you were; he had a job to do.”

De Boef said Gricar did not share any information with him about the case in 1998, which involved Sandusky allegedly showering with an 11-year-old boy. Gricar, he said, reviewed the police reports in private including, presumably, notes or recordings of two conversations that the police heard between Sandusky and the boy’s mother. But Gricar had a reputation for thoroughness, and if he thought he had enough to charge Sandusky, he would have, De Boef and other lawyers said.

Still, the circumstances surrounding Gricar’s disappearance prompt many questions.

On April 15, 2005, Gricar, then 59, took the day off. At about 11:30 a.m., he called his girlfriend, Patricia Fornicola, to say he was taking a drive on Route 192. About 12 hours later, she reported him missing.

The next day, Gricar’s Mini Cooper was found in a parking lot in Lewisburg, about 50 miles from his home in Bellefonte. Gricar’s cellphone was in the car, but not his laptop, wallet or keys, which were never recovered. Months later, the laptop was found in the Susquehanna River without its hard drive, which was discovered later. It was too damaged to yield any information. On the fourth anniversary of his disappearance, investigators revealed that a search of his home computer yielded a history of Internet searches for phrases like “how to wreck a hard drive,” according to a report at the time in The Centre Daily Times.

When Gricar disappeared helicopters, dive teams and patrol cars were deployed, and the F.B.I. was brought in. Reports of Gricar turning up in Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Maryland and other states proved to be dead ends.

So what happened? Friends and colleagues say Gricar was not the type to walk away. His bank accounts were not touched after he disappeared, he had no other sources of income and he had no major debts, said Robert Buehner Jr., a friend and the district attorney in Montour County. Though divorced twice; his ex wife an employee of Penn State at the time of the initial allegations in 1998, he seemed happy with his girlfriend and close with his daughter. Gricar had announced that he was retiring at the end of his term.

If Gricar committed suicide, Buehner added, he would have wanted the body to be found. Foul play is the next possible conclusion. By the nature of their jobs prosecuting criminals, district attorneys end up having many enemies. But no credible suspects have emerged.

The district attorney who looked into the sex-abuse case against Jerry Sandusky in 1998 went missing in 2005 and has been declared dead.
