Penn State - Are the Sanctions Right?

What are your thoughts?

- $60 million fine
- Vacate wins from 1998-2011 (112 wins)*
- Four-year postseason ban
- Players may transfer and play immediately at other schools
- Athletic department on probation for five years
- Reduction in new scholarships from 25 to 15 for 4 years

* Joe Paterno record now 298-136-3; fifth on FBS all-time list

I agree with it but I also don't agree with it. I don't think they should have taken down the statue nor do I agree with taking away his wins. The man went to the grave on bad terms, the lest they could do is let him have that little respect.

I agree with everything else, Penn St. got what they deserved and to me it's like with the NFL. The NCAA wanted to make a example out of Penn St. just like the NFL wants to make an example out of the Saints.

A punishment is necessary, they got their punishment, things could have been worst for them. Talks of the death penalty was going around.

Next stop Miami, word is they have been breaking rules with recruiting.

I have mixed feelings, personally. Yes - punitive actions needed to take place. However, I actually think it might not be enough of a punishment in light of the severity of the crimes they purposefully covered up. The fine is huge, but it's roughly 1 year of revenue. The reduction in scholarships hampers their ability to compete, but only for 4 years? In recompense for a 13 year coverup?

I disagree about your thoughts on vacating the wins. I think that was the absolute right way to go. Think about what was taken away from those kids and compare that to what was "taken away" from Paterno. No comparison in my estimation.

And so it goes that Joe Paterno’s long football career will be remembered for allowing a pedophile to stay on his staff and continue to prey on young children. This is without a doubt the most sickening sports story I have ever drawn about. Paterno’s presence, statues, memorials, heck, I say records even should be completely torn down and banned from the Penn State Campus. The fact that he knew and yet chose to cover it up makes him as guilty in abuse as was Jerry Sandusky.

Priorities. Life is all about getting them right and in order. Some people just have theirs really screwed up. Joe Paterno was one of them. As is so often the case in sports the desire to win, to achieve, to excel, over rides all common sense in the order of priorities. Steroids in Baseball. BountyGate. Recruiting violations. Covering-up the horrific crimes of Jerry Sandusky. Whatever the means all of these are examples of the unhealthy obsession we have with winning. And in the pursuit of that goal, it is ironic that indeed everybody loses when the choice is made to “win at all costs”.

If he wouldn't have died, he quite possibly would have been in prison. Some of the senior officials in the catholic church scandals are starting to be convicted (one just got sent to prison last month).

Dude was a dirt bag and I doubt many outside of Penn State care about him or his records.

The fact that they let the players walk they if choose and play immediately somwehere else makes the punishment just right for me. Something had to happen, but the current players should not have been punished.

I would've shut down the entire program for 1 year for each victim, but I wouldn't have taken away their wins.

The statue can come down but placed in a more private locale.

Upon re-opening their program, I would relegate them to Division II.

The players are faced with dealing with the situation the best they can. Unfortunate for them to be sure, but they're not without options. They can even stay at Penn State, not play at all, and retain their scholarships. For those who are set on continuing to play, they can transfer elsewhere and play right away - minimizing the disruption in their athletic careers.

ummm the NFL is comepletely different than NCAA first off

i have a hard time with this because of just how awful it was.

but on the otherside of things the NCAA really shouldnt get involved with something that isnt specifically football related. Sandusky is going to jail forever and Joe Pa is dead, whoever else was involved should be prosecuted to the fullest extent

but this kinda falls out of NCAA jurisdiction to basically kill this program.

I think it's fair. They should be thanking the NCAA for not giving them the death penalty like SMU got.

And imo this is far worse than what SMU did because of the simple fact that what SMU did still goes around in the NCAA today.
