i would really like to believe that bo will be done after this season but i wont hold my breath. i am quite sure we can at least bring in someone who knows what kind of system they want to install and actually recruit the right players to fit that system.

not only is bo and his staff bad at recruiting, they seem to not even know what kind of offensive system to run after 5 years??? they have no identity at all.

bo has done an okay job but he just isn't cutting it, not for Nebraska standards at least. he needs to go be a coach somewhere else, its just not working out here.

Well if their DEFENSE keeps playing like they have been the last 2 games they just might win out! Holding Mich. to -30 yards rushing in their house is Impressive, I dont care who you are!

Good thing too, cause now the Offense has been sucking! Just cannot seem to get both going together for some reason,

All in all two good wins in a row now, now to rain on Mich. St. parade!

yeah, they love playing with our emotions, don't they? if the offense is clicking then the defense stinks, when the defense is dominating the offense then decides to suck.

i don't know what to think honestly, the defense has to continue to dominate if we want to have a chance at this point, especially against MSU because you know our offense is gonna struggle against them.

then again who the hell knows?

                      we will see.

I know it will be a pissy one this year for sure, and they are gonna have to scramble just to get to 9 wins this year, not too sure if they can win both.

A good perspective from this guy.

I've been a Husker fan since I was about 5 years old, over forty years now. I grew up listening to all the games on The radio every Saturday while playing some form of football in the back yard with one of my friends. We waited for each offensive play, expecting a call like a pitch left and hearing I. M. Hipp break one for a not so uncommon 40 yarder. I remember painting this smooth, purply landscaping rock with words that read "Marvelous Jarvis Sideline Redwine". My teenage memories were cluttered with a 1 yard catch out of bounds against a Penn State team that didn't deserve a National Championship, a loss to a Cinderella Clemson team in the Orange Bowl that cost us a national championship, and I'll never forget where I was and how mad I felt after watching Turner Gill roll out to the right and seeing his pass tipped and fall to the ground on a two point conversion. That play changed my outlook on life-PLAY TO WIN. I named my boy after Tommie Frazier and if you asked my Tommie what to do in that situation, he would say "Go for two".

Tom Osborn had his ups and downs. Frank Solich had his ups and downs. Bo Pelini has had them as well. Solich didn't receive much grace because of the shoes he had to fill and his record in his last 14 games. Clearly, the lack of support from the Administration didn't help. Now, its Nebraska, a University with a reputation that fires their head coach a year removed from playing in a National Championship with a 9-3 season. It was that decision the interim coach expressed disappointment with some 5 years later when he was hired to do the same job.

Why would Coach Pelini accept this job after that debacle? The answer is simple. Leadership. A word synonymous with Tom Osborne. Mr. Tom was back. He wanted to restore the culture of Nebraska football. Wherher you are a BoLiever or not, you have to agree that the culture, or at the very least, the passion changed immediately following the Callahan catastrophe. The first thing that comes to mind is Pelini's first bowl game against a re-surging Clemson team-Two Bo-litzes, hurried throws and Matt O'Hanlon breaking up, what would have been, Clemson's game winning pass in the end zone. I felt proud about Nebraska football once again.

Wins? Yes-about as many as in Osborne's first 6 years.

Losses? Yes-about as many as Osborne's 6 years.

Games with exciting endings? Yes. In fact, more in the last 3 years than in all of Osborne's 25 year tenure.

Calls for the head-coaches head? Yes-Just like there were for Osborne. Can't beat OU. Can't win a bowl. Can't recruit the best talent. Boring offence. Can't throw the ball. Slow on defense. Runs the option on 4th and 1 for a 3 yard loss (oops, that was me complaining).

Coach Osborne was under fire but nobody really new it. There was no social media or ESPN. He was also calm, well spoken, and was the kind of guy you'd let watch your kids, especially if they were 17 and going off to college.

Coach Pelini is abrasive, stubborn, hot headed and has a mouth of a sailor. I might say so myself that "Profanity is the strongest expression of a weak mind", so he's got that going for him. I think that is where this next point comes in. You have to find ways to motivate a team, not to play, but to prepare to play, and then to play, practice after practice, meeting after meeting, game after game. Its a grinding day after day, 365 days a year attitude. That's what defines a culture. Maybe this is just my perception, but Coach Pelini's most affective method for motivation is the "us against the world" mentality. That only works when there is adversity, like a loss. How do you motivate your staff and team to prepare to play, and then play, day after day, after a few wins? This is one of the marks of a great coach. There are very few of them.

Does this mean Pelini can't be a great coach? Let me answer that question this way. Coach Osborne was a good coach. He was NOT a great coach in 1978. When I was eleven, my dad and I went pheasant hunting around Palmyra NE. We would take our camper down the gravel roads and pull over when we saw a property that might have some birds. The Husker/Sooner game was playing one November afternoon. I told my dad that he'd have to hit this next tree line by himself. He parked and I went to the back to watch the game on a 9 inch black and white with a set of rabbit ears. I remember seeing the biggest hit I've ever seen and one of the biggest blown calls in college football. Many would remember that tackle on the kickoff. I remember Billy Sims fumbling inside the 5 and Rick Burns jumping up and down while dotting the "I" in their form of victory formation after pounding the rock for consecutive first down trying to run out the clock. It was the biggest win of Osborne's career. Berry Switzer later admitted that his 78' team was the best one he ever coached. The next week, we took the camper down those same dirt roads to kick up a few more birds. Again, I told my dad he'd have to hit this tree line on his own. Nebraska was playing Missouri. There's nothing more frustrating in football then listening to James Wilder pound the ball down your throat and there's nothing you can do about it, especially on the radio. After Osborne's best win came one of his lowest points. Ups and downs? Yeah, I think Osborne had a few.

Last night I watched a memorable game. Penn State is worthy of being the rival Oklahoma used to be. Now, because of the conference realignment, Nebraska once again is left searching for another rival. Sorry, Iowa and Wisconsin. You just don't have the tradition as an OU or PSU. It'll never be the same in my lifetime. Someone said that college football is as much about rivalries and bragging rights as it is about winning championships. I didn't agree with that two months ago. Now that I do, football has been fun again. What is not fun is listening to those that define their lives by how Nebraska is performing and take it out on the man that tries to deliver that product on the field in a ruthless, childish and ignorant manor. I, too often, am one of them. I grow weary of listening to talk show hosts mouthing off with frustration. At least those that once played for The Coach in the 90's temper their views because they know how hard it is to win, and to win big, and continue to win nowadays. I enjoy "Husker" talk all day but callers to these shows overwhelmingly express frustration by condemning a coach that has poured his guts into a program. Listen, I can argue the point that Pelini should move on as well as anyone else. I won't give the BoHaters the satisfaction. The decision to keep Bo or leave him is not only based on the ups and downs of the past, but what we vision to be the future. It looks at least a little brighter. By no means am I a Bo Apologist. I like Bo (ish). I know he loves the game and he loves the kids. His personality benefits him and his personality hurts him. I think the B1G will soon fit him well. It's his home again. I think Bo's success will be best determined by weather or not moms and dads will be willing to let him watch their kids, especially away from home. "At the end of the day", players play the game.

A well known RB called DB expressed his thoughts about the decision to make a decision about Bo's future. Essentially he was asking who in the administration has the experience and football knowledge to make the decision. The question was rhetorical. The answer is 'nobody'. I hope the same stubbornness that has plagued Bo does not plague our new "outsider" at the AD position. Let us consider, once again, the counsel of the man whose name is synonymous with "Leadership".

Tom's Takes is not just the title of a newspaper column. It's a suggestion. WWTD?

1 day agoI live in PA, a writer from the Philadelphia Inquirer said the flag was thrown because the ref said Abdullah had crossed the goal line. The block was legal but it was unnecessary. Clearly Abdullah had NOT crossed the goal line. This ranks up there with Mike McCloskey catching the ball OUT of bounds.

2 days agoHorrible call! The Penn St. player that actually had a shot at Abdullah could have slowed him down enough for the second one to catch up and make a play. He was only 5 yards behind. Does the Big 10 have a committee to review these calls?
