  • USC cornerback Josh Shaw injured himself saving his nephew from drowning

After all the stupid off field injuries we hear about, it's nice to see something like this. I have so much respect for this guy.

While attending a family social function at his cousin's apartment in his hometown of Palmdale, Shaw looked on from a second floor balcony to the pool below and saw his 7-year-old nephew, who cannot swim, in distress without help nearby. Shaw instinctively leaped off the balcony, landing painfully on the concrete below.

He was able to crawl into the pool and ushered his nephew to safety. Despite the intense pain in his legs, he was then able to grab the ladder and lift himself out of the pool with his upper body

This would be the best way you could possibly injure yourself before your team's season opener. But now USC's story is in question.

Of course, now it seems that Shaw may have made up the story. Everything sounds very strange. I've heard rumors that he was injured jumping off a balcony at a party, or running from the LAPD. It will be interesting to see what the true story is.

-Josh Shaw tells USC he lied about nephew rescue story-

"Josh Shaw, the USC senior cornerback who claimed he sprained both of his ankles while rescuing his 7-year-old nephew from a pool Saturday, admitted to making up the entire story Wednesday afternoon.

"We are extremely disappointed in Josh," said USC head football coach Steve Sarkisian. "He let us all down. As I have said, nothing in his background led us to doubt him when he told us of his injuries, nor did anything after our initial vetting of his story."

USC said it regrets posting the initial story on Shaw on its athletics web site.

"I appreciate that Josh has now admitted that he lied and has apologized," Sarkisian said. "Although this type of behavior is out of character for Josh, it is unacceptable. ...

Sarkisian also said Shaw, elected a team captain Saturday, has been suspended indefinitely from all team activities." ...

You know you have to be a low morals person, to like about saving the life of a child. First when I heard a player hurt his ankles outside of practice. I was thinking, "oh here we go again, another I slipped on a McDonald's wrapper.." but this takes the cake for worst lie told about an injury. Needless to say if USC allows him back, they may allow him with open arms, but behind close doors those players won't respect him.

He didn't just lie to the fan base, or the coaches, or the media, school board, etc. He lied to his teammates, and he was a team captain. The players on the team looked to him, yet he lied to their face.
