  • The hypocrisy that is Notre Dame

It was reported over the weekend that Charlie Weis has signed a six-year contract extension. This new deal takes effect next season and runs through 2015. The deal will make him the highest paid coach in college football, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen. Sources pegged the extension between $30 and $40 million. One source said it was closer to the high end of that range.

It was just three years ago that Ty Willingham had bailed the university out of the whole George O'Leary hiring debacle.
And at this stage of the season Ty actually had a better record, going 8-0 at this stage of the season....did he get a contract extension? Not so much...all we heard was that Ty was winning with Davies' kids.

Two years later he was fired....the first coach in Notre Dame history not to fulfill his entire contract.

Now that Weis is winning with Ty's kids...we arent hearing any of that...but instead are being told that this guy ranks up there with the all time greats.

Maybe Weis can coach....maybe not...time will tell...but Notre Dame has defintely showed its true colors in this situation by forsaking it's principles and putting football first.

Im just trying to think if there is anything different between Weis and Willingham...hmmm....let's see....what could it be....

Quick: I haven't had my ass whipped in a while. Probably been since like...1911?
Sugar Ray: Yeah, thats when you were born and the doctor slapped you on the ass.
Quick: Yes, thats the last ass whipping I recall. And I'm looking for him.

Yeah, I think that it was ridiculous how Ty got fired, he could of atleast finished his contract..and what makes it worst is that Ty is struggling in UW.. I really wish the best for Ty considering it was a crummy thing for them to do...although I am an Irish fan, I'm not going to stand up for that act, I'm just going to support Weis and watch these National Championships rack up...

    GO IRISH!!

Or maybe Notre Dame will sell out even more and lower their academic standards!

I don't buy that...these are "student"-athletes, with most colleges you are required to have atleast a C average just to get into the school and play..what's wrong with having the "B" average stipulation...this is funny because ND hasn't been stopping recruiting top players, they even have a 5 star junior in high school recruit (Claussen) waiting to wear the blue n gold... They still can get athletes easily (Darius Walker, Rhema McKnight, Maurice Stovall)...these guys are great athletes and hold a high GPA isn't stopping them...

ND has a lot of traditions, there is no reason why they shouldn't be in the top 10 every year...same goes for programs like OU, Nebraska, Alabama, Michigan, these programs have great tradition and theres no reason why they shouldn't be powerhouses even with academic restrictions...

Actually there is a HUGE reason....if I can go to OU, OSU, Bama or Texas and not have to study as hard as I would at ND...why would I go to Notre Dame?

Not saying it's right....but it is the state of the world today.

Lou Holtz was one of the best coaches in the college game and how many National Championship did he rack up? All of one in what a ten year stretch?

i think it was rediculous that ty got fired aswell and it is rediculous that a collage coach should be earning that kind of money, but not everything is as cynical as it seems.

Really? Then why is Gerry Faust so dearly loved when fact is he never did squat for the Irish and his release didn't come until after the season was over. I think possiblity exsist that if you're not Roman Catholic and you don't win you wont get the same treatment that you would if you are.

Beyond the racism, Weiss's contract extension is upping the ante on buy-out when (not "if") he decides to leave for the NFL. I know Weiss said he'd stick around until his son graduates, but that line's up there w/"The check's in the mail". Give it 3-4 years.

I don't think race has any play in this. It has everything to do with Weis' ability to flee the coop at a low buyout, now restructured to be more difficult to pay off. Willingham had a good start, but he was an up-and-comer who lacked the powerful name recognition of Charlie Weis. I don't remember ever hearing the name Willingham in NFL discussions when speaking of coaching candidates before he took the ND job. Weis, on the otherhand, was a final candidate for several jobs before taking the Notre Dame one. In my opinion, Weis was a major hire, and it was an absolute steal to get him from the pro game. A good season at his previous contract and Weis likely walks out the door as the new head coach of Houston/New Orleans/Minnesota. That wasn't in the cards for Willingham. This is why he received a contract extension, not the color of his skin.

I've got some great beach front property to sell you in Kansas.

I agree with Koolaid on this one saint. I don't think race was the issue, however I do think that Willingham not being a Roman Catholic might seriously have had something to do with. Davies and Faust were both Roman Catholic they were allowed to finish out their last seasons respectively. Also I remember hearing that the Athletic Department was in knots about hiring Lou Holtz because he wasn't an Roman Catholic. Those three instances lead to believe that having ties to the Roman Catholic church might having something to do with it rather than the color of his skin.

                              So religion...not race. Much better...
