  • Longhorn Players Under Investigation

What impact will this have on the Rosebowl? The sportsbook that I work for has taken the Rosebowl game of the market for the moment until further information comes to hand.

    From Austin.8.News

Several football players from The University of Texas are being investigated by the Austin Police Department for robbery by assault, according to sources close to the investigation.

The investigation stems from two incidents on Sept. 4 and December 10.

The two incidents involve robbery by assault. Sources tell us that the victims are telling police they were downtown when they were beaten up and robbed of their money.

There have been no arrests and no indictments in the investigations, but the cases have been turned over to the district attorney's office for further review.

At least three of the players may be starters for the Longhorn team, sources say.

The Texas Longhorns are ranked No. 2 in the nation and are set to play USC for the National Championship in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 4. It remains unclear what impact these criminal investigations will have on the team's starting line-up.

    From Yahoo.News

Several Austin television stations reported Friday that two Longhorn football players are under investigation by Austin police for two incidents, one on Sept. 4 and one on Dec. 10, allegedly involving robbery and assault in downtown Austin. KVUE and Fox 7 identified the players as starting CB Cedric Griffin and RB/WR Ramonce Taylor.

The Austin American-Statesman reported Friday afternoon that the Sept. 4 incident involved "an automatic handgun."

On its website, News 8 Austin reported that "There have been no arrests and no indictments in the investigations, but the cases have been turned over to the district attorney's office for further review."

            From ESPN

AUSTIN, Texas -- Austin police say they are investigating two separate cases of assault and robbery in downtown Austin that involve members of the Texas athletic department.

The incidents occurred Sept. 4 and Dec. 10. No charges have been filed, and names of those being investigated have not been released.

According to police, the incidents were an alleged armed robbery with an automatic handgun on Sept. 4 and assault and attempted robbery on Dec. 10.

Texas acknowledged the investigation Friday night, and athletic director DeLoss Dodds released the following statement:

"We were surprised by the APD release of allegations concerning one or more of our student-athletes. We have followed up on the rumors that we are hearing and spoken with the two student-athletes who are alleged to be under investigation. Within the limited time we had this evening, we have gathered as much information as possible. Based upon what we know at this time we have no reason to believe that the University or the athletic department need to take any action. We will continue to monitor the matter, and we will cooperate fully with those who are conducting the investigation."

Although Austin police and the University of Texas have not identified the individuals under investigation, attorney Ken Oden confirmed to ESPN's Joe Schad on Friday night that cornerback Cedric Griffin is one of the people being investigated.

"I have agreed to advise Cedric Griffin although no criminal charges have been filed against him. He is the subject of an investigation -- and I stress it is an investigation," Oden told Schad. "I believe no charges will be filed against him. They're saying this is assault and robbery, and it sounds hideous, but this is a trash-talking incident on the street involving Cedric and that's it. I know this is a big game and they're focused on it. But in fairness to Cedric, this was nothing more than a verbal incident in as much as it involves Cedric."

The No. 2 Longhorns are scheduled to play top-ranked Southern California in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 4 for the Bowl Championship Series title.

Griffin has been invited to the Senior Bowl, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Kevin Buchman, an Austin police spokesman, said his office issued its statement after receiving inquiries from the media. He said police would not release more information.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
Superintendent Chalmers: "Thank the Lord"? That sounded like a prayer. A prayer in a public school. God has no place within these walls, just like facts don't have a place within an organized religion."

Just like the Bengals, they'll let them play, unless they're in jail....

                  Longhorns Update. 19th Dec

No charges expected for two Longhorns
                  The Associated Press

An attorney for two University of Texas football players said he expects neither to face criminal charges in an alleged attempted robbery. Meanwhile, school officials said they’ve found no link between its athletes and a separate case involving an automatic handgun.
Police have questioned starting defensive back Cedric Griffin and running back Ramonce Taylor about an alleged downtown assault Dec. 10 after a team banquet, said Ken Oden, who is advising both players.
No. 2 Texas plays top-ranked Southern California in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 4. School officials have said they’ve talked to the athletes being questioned and do not plan any action against them.
No charges have been filed, and no arrests have been made.
“I am confident there will be no cause for criminal charges,” Oden said in Sunday’s editions of The Dallas Morning News.
Oden said the incident, an alleged assault and attempted robbery in Austin’s Sixth Street bar district, was a nonviolent encounter between the players and a group of unidentified men.
Police said Friday that they were investigating Texas athletes in connection with that case and another incident that occurred Sept. 4, when police said a suspect pulled an automatic handgun and committed an aggravated assault.
Oden said the Sept. 4 case does not relate to his clients.
Police have said they would not comment during the investigation.
