im a high school senior right now im trying to break into the caoching field. i have played varsity football for my high school, but right before my senior i tore my shoulder. so i quit playing football and picked up coaching football. i helped coach a pop warner team in my area and now im coaching a middle school team. i coach the LBs and TEs. i hope to gain on-the-job trianing that way i have exprience when i move up to the high school level or college level. i hope to be coaching in the NFL one day but i kno its goin to take hard work to get there. i got to wondering how many people on this board are trying to break into the coaching field to?

I'm not but a very good friend of mine is/has. He started by helping with his former high school team (unpaid)while he went to college. Then his last few years of undergrad he helped out with his college team (again unpaid.) Finally, he became a GA (Graduate Assistant - still unpaid) but that landed him a job as a special teams coach (I think) at a very small college.

If you look at the resumes/histories of most coaches, I think they took a very similar path.

This might sound wierd, but I would suggest buying Mike Shannhan's book about coaching. He wrote about his journey through the coaching world and he literally started with nothing. It's a good read and you'll pick up some great stuff.
Rest in Peace, Darrent and Damien. You will be forever in our thoughts

i have been doing that. I played LB at my high school and my LBs coach coached at FSU. so i have been trying to pick things up from him.

Lol, great minds think alike. I bought that book a few weeks ago and have read a few chapters. It's a really good read. I might even get into coaching myself

Is the Bolts position filled yet?

It's called "Think Like a Champion". I bought mine cheaply from one of the Amazon marketplace sellers.

That's a MUCH harder route, though.

Little league coaches are almost always the dad of a player that has enough time on their hands and played HS football at one point.

The chances of going from HS to College are fairly slim. Unless you are the HC of a top 20 (nation-wide) team. Your best bet is to be a GA.

Well, I am trying to be a coach too. The thing is I am starting too late I am a sophmore in college (Sac State) and have never played organized football - *was homeschooled through high school* But I did catch a break last year and helped coach a local middle school team, I don't know if I will have the same opportunity though this year. I am thinking of trying out for the Sac Sate football team but my chances are extremely small - even though we're not very good.
