    Gatorsports.com Top 25 preseason poll

You can almost taste it. Football season isn't that far away. It won't be long before you're trading in bathing suits for clothes bearing your school colors.

A lot can happen between now and the first game. Injuries, arrests, players not qualifying academically. So any summer rankings have to be taken with a shaker of salt.

Still, here are the inaugural Gatorsports.com preseason college football rankings.

    1. Texas: The Longhorns have a combination of talent and schedule. They'll lose a game but nobody is going undefeated this season.

    2. Ohio State: Hey, the two teams played during the last two regular seasons. Now they get to play for it all. The Buckeyes lost a lot but after reloading on defense a year ago they'll do the same on offense this time.

    3. Southern Cal: The Trojans have enough talent to be in the title game but will fall just short and then complain all the way to the Rose Bowl.

    4. Nebraska: The Cornhuskers Sept. 15 game at home against USC will tell us a lot about this football season and a Nebraska team that seems poised to return to the upper echelon.

    5. Virginia Tech: Football always has feel-good stories and even if you don't like the Hokies you have to be hoping they have a good season.

    6. LSU: If it were simply about the best players, LSU would be No. 1. And with the toughest games at home, it would make sense. But Nick Saban is not walking through that door.

    7. Michigan: The Wolverines are loaded with talent, but it's difficult to have a lot of confidence in Lloyd Carr.

    8. Oklahoma: Love the team, respect the coach but is there a quarterback who can get the Sooners over the hump?

    9. Wisconsin: Plenty of talent back from a one-loss team but the Badgers have to go to Ohio State.

    10. Florida: Too many defensive losses to rank the Gators higher. But Urban Meyer does have a magical touch.

    11. West Virginia: You have to love to watch that offense work and if Pat White stays healthy the Mountaineers could be in the mix for the national title.

    12. Auburn: Last year was considered a disappointment despite wins over LSU and Florida. This year should be better.

    13. UCLA: This may be a reach, but the Bruins are set up to finally have a big year if they can be consistent.

    14. Florida State: The Seminoles have to be better but are hardly on the verge of being an elite team again.

    15. Arkansas: A lot of people have them higher. Did they forget what has happened since last season's loss to Florida?

    16. Rutgers: Hopefully, it finishes better than the other Jersey guys (The Sopranos) did.

    17. Boston College: New coach but really nice talent could make the Eagles an ACC factor.

    18. Georgia: Enigmatic team this year. Could be really good or could be a down year if the Bulldogs struggle out of the gate.

    19. Texas A&M: The talent is there for Dennis Franchione but the road schedule is brutal.

    20. Tennessee: Another one of those SEC teams that is difficult to figure out.

    21. Louisville: Brian Brohm is back but Bobby Petrino is not and could drop the Cardinals out of the top 20.

    22. California: The Golden Bears have lost a lot, but will be good enough to be in contention.

    23. Boise State: Last year's darlings won't be as good but it's not like they're playing USC every week.

    24. TCU: The Horned Frogs will be tough to beat this season.

    25. Oklahoma State: Just a hunch because the offense will be lights out under Larry Fedora.

I like that they are so optimistic about Nebraska but it would have been better if they would have shown more hate for the rest of the big 12.

    Almost forgot the link http://www.gatorsports.com/apps/pbcs...preseason_poll

I find it funny that the national champ gators aren't rated higher than 10 in a poll done on their site, although it is good that their isn't a ton of homerism in the rankings.

Wow, they completely missed the boat on Cal and South Carolina.

Cal loses only their RB out of a set of very explosive players at skill position, and every RB playing in a Jeff Tedford has success.

South Carolina returns 16 starters on a team that went 8-5, and lost 4 games to SEC opponents by less than a TD. They also outplayed Florida at Florida last year, and would have won except for a blocked FG.

        Nebraska @ #4?
        VaTech @ #5?
        FSU @ #14?
        BC @ #17?
        T A%M @ #19?
        OSU @ #25?

Wow. Both Cal and South Carolina have more talent, and will be better than everyone single one of those teams with the exception of Nebreska, who's way too high too high @ #4, IMHO.

I can't really speak for Cal or South Carolina since I didn't really watch them last year but I am a Nebraska homer and I wouldn't have even rated them at 4 to start. There are just to many questions with a full new d-line and a new starting QB, even though he should be a huge upgrade, to be that far up the polls right now.

I also think he only put Virginia Tech that high because he hopes they do good to help them with their recent tragedy. Judging by his comment on them, it doesn't seem that he is confident with putting them up there for any other reason.

Nebraska is an up and coming program that will get back to there once dominant program in the Big 12 along with OU and Texas, but I think they need to be seriously competitve before they're warranted a top #5 preseason ranking.

Nevermind about my comments. I see this is an opinionated poll from Gatorsports, who are probably South Carolina haters, and don't understand anything outside the SEC.

Preseason rankings don't mean too much and I know I shouldn't get so hyped about them, but I do feel programs need to earn their preseason ranking to a degree when considering the official preseason rankings that go through the season because it has proven to determine who plays in the NC game within the past.

Probably because the Gamecocks were robbed of their upset against Florida this year!

They should have won that game, if not for Jarvis Moss blocking the field goal to close the game

                  USC should be #1.

Virginia Tech over LSU? I think not. We'll see though. After all, they do play this season.

                  Nebraska is too high.

                  And where's Notre Dame?

it is very surprising not seeing the hurricanes there. Not because i think they should be there, its just that they have been in the top 25 forever....lets get it on track fellas

I think Georgia is ranked about right. There are too many unknowns for them, especially losing both starting DE's to the NFL and a cornerback (Paul Oliver) to academic ineligibility.

However, they have three solid number 1 running backs, their number one receiver (Sean Bailey) coming back from injury in which he missed all of last year, and the number one recruited QB last year who will now be a soph (Matt Stafford).

The Bulldogs always have a top 10 recruiting class so it will not be hard to find replacements, it's just a question of how long it will take them to gel. And the fact that they have to play Florida, Tennessee, SC, GT, and Auburn every year, and Alabama, LSU, Arkansas every couple years. It's tough to win in the SEC, but I'm still proud of their 2 SEC titles since 02.

Oh and by the way, there's nothing like a top 25 without Notre Dame to make my day!!! That won't happen the way the polls baby them though.

I think Michigan's rated too low, and I think FSU is a little too high. Those are the teams I watch the closest, and the only ones I really care about - but Nebraska at #4 is a joke.
