CU football coaches released the first depth chart changes of preseason practices today and Cody Hawkins, the head coach's son, has won the starting quarterback job.
Hawkins won the job over junior Nick Nelson in a narrow decision that came down to his ability to move the team, his leadership and his overall knowledge of the offense.
While Hawkins was expected to be the starter, there were some surprises, the biggest being news that true freshman wide receiver Josh Smith has been hospitalized with a bruised kidney. He is out indefinitely.
Redshirt freshman Scotty McKnight was one of the biggest surprises. He is listed atop the depth chart at one wide receiver position.
Also, junior linebacker Marcus Burton has been declared academically ineligible and will miss the season, further draining an already depleted group of running backs.
The starting offensive line at this point consists of Tyler Polumbus and Edwin Harrison at tackles, Daniel Sanders at center and Devin Head and Wes Palaazi at guards. Head has one start to his credit and Palaazi has never played in a game at the collegiate level.
