The Merriman Mystery

Last week, MDS noted that Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman, who notched 17 sacks in only twelve games a year ago, believes that he's having his best season, even though he has chalked up 5.5 sacks through nine games in 2007.


On Sunday, Merriman had one tackle and no sacks, so he's stuck at 5.5 through ten games.

Let's take a look at some photos:

Merriman played in only 12 games last season because he was suspended for four games for violation of the league's policy on anabolic steroids and related substances. He claimed that a supplement he was taking had been spiked with a steroid, and he made some noise at the time about suing the supplemental manufacturer. But, to date, it hasn't happened.

Wow! When that first picture was taken, there was a rumor he had a neck.

Glaring stats:

Not only does he have 5.5 sacks so far, but he's had them in only 3 games:

2.5 vs. Oakland. Big whoof, I have 2.5 sacks vs. Oakland this year.

1 sack vs. Kansas City, buthe had 8 solo tackles and 10 total tackles in this game, so he did contribute.

2 sacks vs. New England. And being that the Pats dominated the game from start to finish, those sacks were not a turning point.

So when you add them up, 3.5 of his sacks came in games when they were a factor.

To make it worse, that leaves 7 sackless games (or sacless, depending on how you look at it.)

But to his defense, Ted Cottrell doesn't blitz him as often, from what I heard. I only saw three of their games and he was virtually absent in two of them, the Oakland game being the third.

No one, absolutely no one comes off the juice to be a better player. They get on it to be a better player. Luckily for him this is only his 3rd year, but I doubt any of his years, blitz crazy or not, will equal his first 24 games.

His stats and overall play speak for itself.

As for the photos they were doctered, but not by PFT but by San diego. When he was holding out they needed some kind of a photo or somthing.

the one jersey is bunched on the end for a tighter fit on the pads. and one does not. he definetly has lost some mass but i think the jersey issue clouds it up. Oh and yes his play has dropped off ALOT. and now he is gonna have problems downstairs. what a waste. but also then again the whole chugger team has fallen off this year.
