It appears as though the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are no longer attempting to convince quarterback Jake Plummer to play football again. They are, however, still trying to make him pay for not playing for the Bucs.
The Buccaneers and Broncos have filed three joint grievances against Plummer, 33, over the last year due to Plummer's decision to retire unilaterally shortly after Tampa Bay traded a 2008 seventh-round draft pick to Denver in exchange for Plummer during the 2007 offseason.
The Bucs will be attempting to have Plummer pay as much as $7 million in bonus money he received while playing for Denver.
While the date, place and time have yet to be set, the grievance hearing is expected to be held later this month.
Tampa Bay has attempted to lure Plummer out of retirement several times, but to no avail. Bucs head coach Jon Gruden and general manager Bruce Allen went as far as flying to Idaho to meet with Plummer last summer, but the quarterback couldn't be convinced to play football again.
The Bucs currently have six quarterbacks - Jeff Garcia, Brian Griese, Luke McCown, Chris Simms, Josh Johnson and Plummer - on their roster. The Bucs released QB Bruce Gradkowski last week.
Plummer, who has three years remaining on his contract, completed 57.1 percent of his career passes for 29,253 yards and tossed 131 touchdowns and 131 interceptions after entering the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals in 1997.
