  • NFL Player's Union to pay retired players $28.1 million

They finally won a well deserved lawsuit. I am actually a little pissed with the news that the players union is the reason I play with #7 at quarterback instead of John Elway on Madden.

A federal jury ruled on Monday that the National Football League Players Association must pay retired players $28 million in royalties it got from companies including video-game maker Electronic Arts Inc.

Former Green Bay Packers player Herb Adderley was a lead plaintiff in the 2007 lawsuit.

The jury in San Francisco awarded $7.1 million after finding that the Washington, D.C.-based union breached its fiduciary duty to the retired players, but awarded no damages on its finding that the union also violated the terms of the players' group licensing agreements. It awarded another $21 million in punitive damages.

The lawsuit was filed by Manatt, Phelps & Phillips LLP which represented as many as 2,062 former National Football League players.

The suit charged that the union and its Players Inc. licensing unit owed the former players royalties from licenses with makers of video games such as Electronic Arts' "Madden NFL" game as well as from other football products.

Redwood City, Calif.-based EA (NASDAQ: ERTS) itself wasn't a party in the lawsuit.
wow, so quick math lesson here.

most lawyers cuts are 33% (1/3) of the lawsuit.

so a 1/3 of $28 million is about $9.33 million

    $28,000,000.00 - $9,330,000.00 = $18,670,000

$18.67 Million split 2,062 ways is a big whopping total of $9,054.31 for each player.

what a disgrace that lawsuit was to the players....the lawyers make off with $9.33 mill, and each player only comes out with $9,054.31.

    what a joke.

Joke or not, it's a win for them as they just wanted some sort of profit for video games using their exact likeness other than the name.

It is not the NFLPA's fault that you have to use #7 on Madden, it is Elway's. He did not want to license his name to them. He was in the rival football game last year form 2K Sports.

I don't play the rival and he was an example. There is letters to EA and the NFLPA showing that they refused to shop around any old name players including the ones that don't mind their name being used for little to nothing in compensation.
