and a 10-7 final over a 31-30 score, watching Balt and Pit play defense over the past 10 years has been nothing short of amazing as a fan of the game. Almost makes me wanna change teams (I'm kidding)!. But, seriously, living on the East Coast, and having the Sunday Ticket, I've had the pleasure of being able to watch a lot of Steeler and Raven games at 1PM as I wait for the Bronco game to start at 4. What each does on defense is truly an art form. Control chaos. Exciting. Amazing....and everthing Denver hasn't been for 10 years.
It really hits you that what those two teams have built and the players they have to run what has been established is not something that you just whip up during a summer of OTAs. I think we all understand that. I think I also understand that watching those teams operate depresses me because what they have and what "we" have (and what we want) are 1,000,000 galaxies apart.
Finally, no, you don't have to play defense the way the Steelers or Ravens play it to win a Super Bowl. That point has been proven over the years, but what it does give you is a foundation. A foundation that is always there. A foundation that "allows" your rookie, starting QB to go 3-14 for 60 yrds midway througth the AFC Championship Game, and yet still be in the game. A foundation that "allows" for your starting RB to average about 2 yrs per carry (Willie Parker last night) and for your team to be leading the game. A foundation that allow for a team (Ravens), with virtually NO playmakers on offense, to be in the AFC Title game. A foundation that doesn't force your offense to press (Broncos) because they know they must score a TD every single, freakin' time they have the ball. A foundation that makes up for the fact that your OLine is below average and routinly gets your QB (Big "Ben") killed on a weekly basis.
Ok - I had to get that off my chest. Thanks for reading (or flaming).
