Chargers sign 18 rookie free agents

    April 27, 2009 7:06 PM

    Posted by ESPN.com's Bill Williamson

The San Diego Chargers signed 18 undrafted free agents.

There's not a lot of household names here, but maybe one or two will be a surprise and make the 53-man roster:

Samuel Allen, T, Grand Valley State
    Darry Beckwith, LB, Louisiana State
    Curtis Brinkley, RB, Syracuse
    Greg Carr, WR, Florida State
    Jeremy Childs, WR, Boise State
    Anthony Felder, LB, California
    Dan Gay, T, Baylor
    James Holt, LB, Kansas
    Rashaad Jackson, NT, Clemson
Charles Martin, WR, West Texas A&M
    Ryan McDonald, C, Illinois
    Ben Muth, G, Stanford
    Wopamo Osaisai, CB, Stanford
    William Rentmeester, FB, Wisconsin
    Rodgeriqus Smith, WR, Auburn
    Kory Sperry, TE, Colorado State
    Claude Spillman, S, Marshall
Jerimiah Wurzbacher, TE, North Dakota State

AJ hasn't lost his mind, every team signs UFAs after the draft for camp fodder, but they occasionally find a diamond in the rough among them....one quick example was our 2003 draft class, of which only 2 drafted players & 3 UFAs are still with the team, but the 3 UFAs are all Pro Bowlers (TE Antonio Gates, OG Kris Dielman & WR/ST Kassim Osgood).

NFL wide, the list of superstars who originally went undrafted for one reason or another would probably shock you with some of the name, and how productive they have turned out to be.....

oh and also the cost is pretty meaningless compared to normal player contracts

more cannot hurt, it can only increase the odds of finding a hidden gem....like gates dielman or cooper

I think they got a nice deal by taking Darry Beckwith, linebacker from LSU

Oh so my brother was right.

Ben Muth, that guard SD signed, went to my high school.
I hated my high school so im not that excited about it though. Lol.

Greg Carr is actually a good addition. From when I watch the Chargers play they do a lot of jump balls and Greg Carr is like 6 foot 6...not a lot of defensive backs are going to catch balls over him
