  • Cutler Alienating Bears Fans?

    http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/...ienating-fans/

Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, the rocket-armed Pro Bowl passer acquired this offseason in a blockbuster trade from the Denver Broncos, apparently isn’t making himself very popular with the local fan base.

According to David Haugh of the Chicago Tribune, Cutler is turning off some fans by refusing to sign autographs while attending Chicago Cubs baseball games.

“I know Cutler already has alienated enough small pockets of fans at various appearances in Chicago to produce a flurry of furious e-mails, such as the one from a guy at Wrigley Field last week who criticized the quarterback for waving off autograph seekers,” Haugh writes. “Generally speaking, the same folks complaining about Cutler’s insouciant behavior will be cheering him on his first 350-yard Sunday. Sure, Cutler could do himself some favors by exuding more charm or suffering the occasional fool with a little less outward disdain.

“But those who have been Bears fans for two decades or two generations, need to remember Cutler has been here for two months. There will be and has been a degree of culture shock. Denver isn’t Chicago. Eventually, Cutler will adjust because he will learn life is easier that way in this tradition-rich football city. If he doesn’t, then he will get what he deserves. But it’s too early in his tenure to predict that.”

As Haugh correctly pointed out, Cutler just got to town. Plus, football isn’t a popularity contest.

It’s a game of skill and will.

Nonetheless, this piece of information does tend to reinforce the bad reputation that Cutler gained during his messy divorce from the Denver Broncos.

Besides working on throwing touchdown passes, Cutler might want to sign a few autographs.

How does this not surprise me in the least bit...? The past 2 years while attending Bronco's fan fair at Invesco Field Cuter ALWAYS came off as a huge jerk that seemed like he never wanted to be there in the first place. Little kids would run up to him asking for pictures and high fives but Cutler would always reject them.

I have also heard from several people who have gotten the opportunity to meet Jay outside of Fan Fare or any of the training camps and they say the same exact thing... And that is Jay is a very rude guy that has no apprection for his or his team's fan base.

Just cant believe he's already over the honeymoon period in Chicago.

    Glad your gone Jay!

Jay Cutler is not a Bronco.

The Chicago Bears are not the Denver Broncos.

Moved to the Other Teams section.

It takes effort to sign an autograph.

It takes effort to be nice to adoring fans.

It takes effort to make a phone call.

It takes effort to return a text message.

It takes effort to hold your head up when you run from the sideline to the huddle in an NFL game.

It takes effort to move in the pocket in the 4th quarter.

It takes effort to go through your progressions when the #1 option is covered.

Did I say it takes effort to sign autographs?

Don't read into too much. Give the guy a break... I wouldnt like people in my grill all day either. We all need personal space at times, and some fans are "crazy" so you have to be careful.
          Go Broncos!!!

You'd get tired of signing autographs all day, too.

I'm sure he's asked to sign autographs constantly, and if he did sign them whenever asked, he would literally be signing autographs day in and day out.

I've seen Sidney Crosby (I grew up with him, see him at the gym everyday in the summer, and used to play hockey / street hockey with him as a kid) blow off so many people around town here in the offseason. He's always portrayed as such a kind hearted, model citizen though, but I've seen him be a total pr!ck at times.

Thank you Skywalker for the Marshall sig!

                  Nothing new here.

Jay Cutler is not going to change his stripes over night.

This kind of behavior has been reporterd since he was rookie...

Plummer was right, Jay Cutler is the next Jeff George.

I dont know what happened there at that MLB game. In a way I think Cutler is not totally in control of his personality -- or what exactly he wants it to be. Honestly, it takes a certain type of person ( taking physical skill and talent out of it ) to be a SuperStar. Some crash and burn -look at Britney or Robert Downy JR. Some thrive -John Elway Mick Jagger Robert Plant. I hope Cutler doesn't lose his way without his father figures -Shanny and the other coaches. As the article says, it's too early in his tenure to know if that's how he actually is.

Frankly, I think a lot of Cutler's apparent arrogance comes from his insecurity. It's a shame he doesn't seem to show much diplomatic skill; To QBs it's probably a nice skill to have.

On the flipside, I can understand wanting to enjoy the MLB game and not have to sign autographs or whatnot. A diplomatic Cutler could have said or made it known, I will be available to sign autographs on such and such a date, today I'm watching baseball.

I'm not going to sit at my computer and lay judgment on the guy when I know for damn sure, I would find aspects of being a Star unbearable. He might not be the coolest most generous guy, but he sure can spin it.

                    Good Luck Jay

Whatever, Bear Fan, you are going to learn soon enough that Jay Cutler is one gigantic mirage...you think you see a Championhsip calibur franchise QB in him, but it's all an illusion.

McDaniels is no dummy when it comes to QB's, and after working with him for about two weeks, suddenly wanted to trade for Matt Cassel out of the blue.

Jay Cutler's nickname should be 'fools gold'.

Good luck, Bear fan, you will need it.

I remember reading stories similar to this about Cutler a couple of years ago. I didn't pay much attention to them, because I was a big fan, and I just figured it was more of an exception than the norm for him......

Now I'm not sure, and now it's someone else's matter.......

Shouldn't this go in the other teams forum? Since, Cutler is no longer a Bronco.
