  • Browns sign George Foster

Continuing to add depth at the offensive tackle spot, the Cleveland Browns on Friday signed free agent George Foster, a former first-round draft choice, who was released by the Detroit Lions last week after they signed Jon Jansen.

Foster, 29, has been a starter in the league at both tackle positions and should be able to compete for playing time in Cleveland.

Contract details were not available, but it is believed Foster signed a one-year deal.

A first-round choice of Denver in the 2003 draft, Foster started mostly at right tackle in three of four seasons with the Broncos. In that span, Foster made 45 of 48 starts.

The former Georgia star was traded to the Lions in 2007, in a deal that brought cornerback Dre Bly to the Broncos. But because of some injuries and an offensive line that seemed in constant flux, Foster made only 12 starts in two seasons with the Lions.

He is the second veteran offensive tackle signed by the Browns this offseason, joining former Chicago Bears starter John St. Clair. For now, the projected starter at right tackle is veteran Ryan Tucker, but St. Clair and Foster provide depth. The line has been a problem area for Cleveland the past several seasons.

Foster has appeared in 68 games, with 57 starts.

      He'll just be a backup.

      Just another depth player.

Another baseless allegation by Pasquarelli. The last several years?

Last year, the Browns allowed 24 sacks and the previous year allowed 14.

That's some "horrible" protection of the QB, huh?

        Friggin' jerk.

Don't you think they should try Foster at OG instead of OT? Like what happened to Gallery.

The Browns don't need a guard, they need depth at tackle. So, he will be a backup tackle. Probably backup Joe Thomas.

Do keep in mind that the "experts" perception is based on the reality they live in inside their own pea-brains.

24 one year and 14 the previous is fantastic! This year? I'd love to see em get back under 20.

                  No.

                  Phil Savage signed Stallworth.

George Kokinis is the GM now. This is nothing but a depth signing. The Browns need depth at OL. Who else out there in free agency has as much experience as Foster?

If your new GM was looking for depth, why didn't he sign Orlando Pace?

Foster isn't a bad signing, and I was unaware of your new GM. Any signings at this point are band-aids. You hope they become more with the realization that they are leftovers.

Orlando Pace signed with the Bears, the very same day Denver traded Cutler. Also, what makes you think that Orlando Pace wants to be a backup? Because he didn't sign with Chicago to be their backup. He signed to be their starter. You don't sign a backup tackle to a 3 year $15 million contract.

Why would he have been a back-up in Cleveland?, I think you are overrating your OL. Pace was an available FA for at least 2 weeks before the Bears signed him, did the Browns even make an attempt to contact his agent?

                          Did you even hear me?

                          The Browns need depth.

Depth does not equal starters. Depth equals quality backup players.

The Browns have Ryan Tucker and Joe Thomas at tackle. For another year or two that should be fine. So, Orlando Pace is not a needed player. Sure, 4 years ago he would have been nice to have. But that was before Joe Thomas became a Brown. Orlando Pace is an aged veteran and he has more than lost a step. He makes Pro-Bowls based off of his play in the past. People see his name and they think "Pro Bowler" so they vote for him. He is not the player he once was and the Browns need to sign players that provide depth. Pace does not provide depth because he believes he still commands a starting job and starting salary. So, he is not the player the Browns should look for because he wants to start. The Browns do not need starters. They need depth. They need quality backups.

Key difference between a need for "Depth" and a "Need - Period". The Browns do not NEED a tackle. They need depth at tackle. They need somebody that can fill in for a game or two in case of injury. Not a player that demands to start - because that is not what the Browns need. George Foster does not need to start. He is a quality backup who has started in the NFL and when you look at players that are in free agency he is the most qualified - NOW. Not 2 months ago. NOW.

Yeah, I *HEAR YOU*. The Browns do not need starters on the OL. I'll be sure to to book my tickets to Miami from Cleveland come February....

I'm thankful to see that the Browns are on our schedule.

the browns line is pretty good. their problem is they suck at everything else. they cant run the ball or pass.

their qb's suck and so do their WR's for the most part. Edwards need to return to his 2007 form and they need to hope their 2nd round picks actually do something.

they need their passing game back so jamal lewis can be good again.
in summary, cleveland will be lucky to win 5 games next year based on their horrible defense and offense
