Champs New Power Poll

Hello All,
I've created my own power poll... I know what you are thinking (who cares?).
Well, here's how mine works, it's a way to judge teams on the quality of their oppenent. I simply used ESPN's power rankings, which ranked teams 1-32. If you beat the #32 team, you get 1 point... beat the #1 team, get 32 points. Lose to the #1 team, lose a point, lose to the #32 team, lose 32 points.
I will use current ranking always... so a victory against Cincy looks good now for the Broncos, since they are a better team then anyone gave credit to after week one.

Let me know if you like it, and I'll update it throughout the year.

What I found interesting is that the Patriots were #2. Even with a loss. But the Patriots have played 3 top 10 teams this year. People talk about Denver's week schedule, but we're right there with the Vikings and Colts.

Since the Saints don't play this week, I'm pretty sure the winner of the Denver/NE game will jump to number one.

Again, this isn't my opinion, just a power ranking.

Week 5 notes

As you can see, Denver got moved to #1 after a win over New England.
In all fairness, the only reason they jumped New Orleans was because the Saints had a bye...

*** Why did the Saints lose points on their bye week? The system grades all wins on teams rankings of THIS week. So the Saints lost points because now their win over the Jets is worth less points.


***Why are the Bengals (4-1) above the undefeated Cotles Vikings and Giants? Simply because they have 3 quality wins... and their one loss was to #5 Denver. Conversly, the Giants best win is against the Cowboys so they haven't been able to rack up much points.

*** How fair is this system? I don't know, but the 5 undefeated teams are all in the top 7 and the winless teams are at the bottom, so I'll stick with it. All it takes is wins and losses, no intangibles, but the intangibles are factored into the ESPN power rankings.

***Looking ahead, If the Saints and Broncos both win, it could be very close for #1 next week. The Bal/Minn. game also has a lot of points riding on the winner. A Bronco loss, probably drops them to around 4th or 5th.

*** Thanks for the positive feedback, the intial excel sheet took a little bit of time to set up, but now it's just a couple of minutes of input to update.

Hope you have an easy and fast way to update all the scores. Now just all all the other major power rankings average them all out in a BCS super computer to create the super power ranking. J/K this is pretty cool. Keep going as long as its not to time consuming.

Well for one, you guys at least have a win, sure it only netted you 3 points, but it cost KC 29 points... also, the Raiders have 2 "quality" losses to top 5 teams, the Broncos and the Giants.
But I have seen the Raiders play this year, besides the first half of SD, I would agree with your assessment.

Week 6 Notes

*** I said in week 5 notes, that New Orleans and Denver would be very close if N.O. won. They did, but Denver maintained it's lead. To be fair, the Saints had a bye, so this week will be the great equalizer.

*** Some big flucuations in the power rankings from ESPN really affected some teams performances... a win over the Jets or Eagles doesn't carry the same weight it did a couple weeks ago. On the flip side, the Raiders and Texans were big movers in the ESPN ranking, so a win against them really helped teams out.

***The Broncos points will flucuate on their bye week unless their is none or equal movement on the rankings of their 6 opponents.

***Week 7 could be a very close poll. If rankings didn't change and Minn, NO both won... the top 3 would be (1) Minn- 97 (2) Den 96 (3) NO 93. The Vikings haven't had a bye yet though.
