  • Question for Broncos fans

I'm a Bears fan, I grew up in a small, chilly urban area just 5 miles out of downtown Chicago. The Bears have always been in my blood, we've had some up and down seasons, just like anyone else. However there is one thing the Bears were always known for... the physical style of football we'd play with ball control and close to no turnovers. We'd win a lot of games with that style of football, no it wasn't always the flashiest or what would get us on ESPN Sportscenter highlights, but it was working. By God, how great does Kyle Orton sound right about now....

Anyway, I have a question for you guys.

Jay Cutler is overrated, there's no other way to say it. Does he have a cannon for an arm? Yes. But what else does he have? His mechanics are some of the worst I've seen since Rex Grossman, down right laughable. Very rarely does he audible into a different blocking scheme or into any sorta of play that would help contain the rush. A decent athlete, sure, but very rarely does he make use of that skill. The targeting of one WR and throwing into multiple coverage has to be one of the most frustrating things I've seen in years. What is this guys problem?

Our coaching staff is being blamed up and down for the inconsistencies and while they're certainly not helping anything, I seem to recall Cutler making these exact same mistakes in Denver, when he was under the guidance of Mike Shanahan, a man known specifically for his offense, if nothing else. Many of our games this season have been eerie similar to what you guys were faced with this last year. We're coming out flat, uninspired and the minute Cutler makes a mistake, he retreats to the sideline where he sits on the bench and pretty much stares into space while avoiding all contact with anyone else on the team. This is frustrating to no end and makes me wonder, where did anyone get the idea this guy was a 'franchise QB'.. that is simply beyond me. Someone who you invest that kind of money into (and the extension was down right laughable at this time) and more or less base your future on, if he doesn't produce as you were promised he would, that is more painful than anything. The ultimate stinger? We're pretty sure, barring a miracle, Lovie and his staff along with Jerry Angelo will be gone by years end, what good does it do though? Whoever comes in is not going to have a first or second round selection...

Uggh.... I thought Cutler was supposed to fix all of this? So far, he's been average, if not below. My fellow Bears brethern can say all they want about how we'd be lucky to be 2-4 with Orton..etc etc. But I don't buy that. Orton was 9-7 with average players around him last season. Cutler? 8-8 with that oline of yours, Marshall & Royal. The guy couldn't even beat lowsy Buffalo at home late last season to put you guys into the playoffs..

There's still 10 games to be played on both sides, but congrats Denver.... you guys pretty much raped us a new one.

So my ultimate question to you guys.

How did this guy get such a larger than life reputation? Talk about over hyped in every sense of the word.

He wasn't well-liked here in the first place.

I've been calling him "Rex Cutler" since 2007 and was furious when we benched Plummer for him.
    Anyone seen Jake Plummer?

welll..what can we say? dont get me wrong he has one of the strongest arms in the NFL and is very mobile...but that stuff doesnt mean crap when he cant read the D, has bad mechanics, and constantly squeezes his throws in double and sometimes even triple coverage... did i mention hes a bad leader too?...haha well your 20 million dollar man will most likey have 20+ picks this year if he doesnt stop sucking now...sorry man

How did he get such a great reputation? Because the guy has a cannon, and can make throws that NO OTHER QB CAN MAKE. However, what is this really good for if you turn the ball over over 1 time a game. Sometimes the guy literally just throws it aimlessly down the middle of the field and hopes for the best. He will wow people with several throws a game, but he'll also disgust you as well. Personally I think he was hyped up so much because VY and Leinart were so so hyped out of college, and Jay just started out much better than those 2, that will certainly help.

Lets just put it this way...

When you have an offensive line as great as ours at protecting the QB, and the kind of talent we had/have at the WR/TE position, it is completely inexcusable to turn the ball over 20 times, which is what he did. With the offense that we are running now, I don't think there's any way Cutler could run it better than Orton.

Why does he get a lot of hype? His physical ability is some of the best I've seen in a QB in a long time.

Put everything together, armstrength, quickness, scramble ability, I haven't seen much of him in Chi, but when he was here I thought his mechanics were alright. But physically, there aren't many QB's like him. However, his decision making ability is horrendous. He's trying to make all the plays all the time, and he hasn't figured out that every QB in the game is to some extent a game manager, even the best like Brady, Manning, Palmer, McNabb, Brees, all know how to facilitate the offense to produce results. Cutler knows how to throw the ball on a rope 20 yards down field into coverage. And he can do it and make it work, not many guys can, but it wont work every time, not in this league, and he hasnt figured that out.

Cutler is a thrower, Kyle Orton is a Quarterback.

Anyone with one good eye and half a football brain could see he wasn't any good and was hurting the Broncos more than he helped them. But then the Bears front office and coaches have been making draft picks, trades, and signings based on reputation rather than sensible analysis for a few years now. At least that is the way it appears what they have been doing. That is why they have accumulated such a collection of aging junk for a team. The key with Cutler has always been, will he wise up and actually work at learning how to play the position? He never did in Denver and so far doesn't look like he is in Chicago. It may take being a bust with another team before he gets it or perhaps he never will? Part of the problem is that all the big arm lovers enable these guys. Game after game and year after year we heard Lovie Smith say "Rex is our Quarterback" while he fumbled and threw interceptions and killed the Bears. All the while Kyle Orton worked on improving his craft but couldn't get a look from the Bears until last year. When the Orton/Culer trade came down Bears fans completely forgot how well Orton played before he got hurt last year and at the time many of them were talking about how they maybe had found their long term solution at QB. No one seems to remember that anymore.

I liked Cutler as a player, and he is still a good QB most of the time, but I hate his attitude, I don't know... He just looks and acts like an idiot. But he was and still is way overrated, he is also very inconsistent, not to mention careless. People forget that he threw the ball 616 last season behind one the best offensive lines to produce those stats. I'm starting to see how a QB like Orton wins more games. He might take more sacks but at least it's better than throwing a pick. Orton is keeping games alive and helping our defense. Plus, he is just getting better as he spends more time in the system and he has a great attitude.

Exactly! Orton helps your defense and vice versa. Funny thing is Bears fans and media thought Cutler would help their defense!

the sad part for bears fans, is that unless cutler himself changes, this is what you will see for a number of years.

the other problem is that the bears staff doesn't have anyone decent to guide cutler into being a better player. when a guy like McD who coached brady and cassel doesn't want to have anything to do w/ cutler...that's trouble.

the bears will need a front office overhaul and bring in someone that can butt heads with cutler to get him to change his ways...but the flip side is that the bears have little leverage against cutler....already gave up multiple draft picks and now a huge contract extension

                  it's a tough situation there

Ya, a QB that is turnover prone is great for a defense..

I've asked the same questions since coming over after a lifetime of being a Bears fan. This is not my Chicago Bears. Jerry D is a moron, he has no football sense, no ability to judge talent, and is throwing down the toilet the longest, most storied franchise in NFL history. Getting Cutler was about JD's ego. Every time I see Cutler sitting on the bench, I remember Orton talking to his receivers, his coaches, or to Grossman or Hanie. I remember his dignity under stress, his coolness under pressure, both off the field and on. Hell, even Rex had that, at least. I didn't like Rex on the field, but I admired the way he handled himself.

The QB is the face of the franchise. He was brought in to be the face of the franchise. I can't stand looking at that face any more. I'd trade Cutler for Orton, straight up in a heartbeat, if I were Jerry D. If you just want a strong arm, trade him for Bobby Douglass! At least Bobby was tough.

TRUST ME, MY FELLOW BEAR--come on over, if you can. It's such a relief to watch the Bears implode (yet again) from a safe vantage point. Like watching a horrible, unfaithful woman finally being some other poor sap's problem. Someday, maybe, we'll be back. I hope so, but right now the thought of going through all that again makes me queasy.
                      Respect...it's earned, not given.

but it does seem like we traded cutler at just the right time, doesn't it? it's like shorting the market we give him inflated stats and everyone is entranced by that arm...we get into a bidding war between the bears, bucs, skins and we make out w/ 2 1sts and orton to solidify our future

Ha, ya I remember when Bears fans were saying Forte was a top 5 RB...what a joke. The guy doesn't even do well when his O line even gives him a chance. He's not strong nor fast nor very quick. Everything about this guy just screams average.

ExBearsFan, you have some serious issues. If you really are an ex Bears fan, you are no longer allowed to say "Someday, maybe we'll be back", especially if you are enjoying watching the Bears implode. I'm a Bears fan who is rooting for the Broncos as well this year because I happen to be a big fan of Orton and think he was never given a fair shot. I'm also a Purdue grad, so I'm a little biased on that one. As much as I was pissed that the Bears traded for Cutler when I did not think we needed to do that, I am still going to root for the "Beloved" first and foremost, and before the Broncos. Also, the GM of the Bears is Jerry A., but you keep referring to Jerry D. It's Angelo, not D'Angelo, If you were really a true Bears fan, you'd know the name of the GM. Perhaps you were using "D" as an abbreviation for something else, Like, Di_khead?
