Cutler Hasn't Performed Up To Expectations In Chicago

Basically, yeah. That was the general expectation.

Jay Cutler's phenomenal, downright freakish, physical abilities were supposed to allow Ron Turner (the chuckleheaded OC of the Bears) to finally "open up his playbook all the way" and start challenging Defenses vertically. His awesome scrambling talents were supposed to take all pressure off of a truly horrid Bears o-line. His unmatched arm strength and pinpoint accuracy deep was supposed to transform a mediocre WR corps into an All-Pro Bowl lineup. His truly unique skill of being able to pass off of his back foot while running full speed was supposed to defeat any possible blitz. His incredible leadership abilities were supposed to lift the play of the entire Offense, the spillover affect giving the struggling Defense a much needed break.

Now however, it's the o-line can't block so Jay's constantly running for his life. None of the receivers can catch anything and it's their fault that Jay's thrown so many picks. The entire coaching staff are drooling buffoons who all need to be fired right now. Matt Forte isn't supporting Jay due to his inability to run for 10 yards per carry. The Defense is allowing opponents to run up the score before Jay has a chance to do anything.

It's everybody else's fault. None of the blame is to be assigned to Jay...

Spot on. Cutler would help the D by keeping them off the field and by running up points. He'd help the running game by forcing defenses to respect the deep ball. He'd help the OL with his scrambling. He'd elevate the receivers.

In short, this one guy would improve the other 21 players on the field! I'm surprised they didn't say he'd help the punting game.

Now, of course, they're saying "it's those other 21 guys holding Jay back." Some truth in that, of course (and truth that he's holding them back as well), but it was true for Orton in spades.

If JA had built a "team" around Orton, they could be moving in the direction of the 2009 Broncos. Instead, he sold the future and they're looking more like the Broncos of 2008. Only worse.

I defended Cutler when he was here in Denver. I thought he was a tremendously talented quarterback.

When it became evident that we were going to trade Cutler away, I was very disappointed. I really thought he was a great quarterback despite what many on here had been saying for a long time.

Now we have Orton, and I see Cutler in a different system that we can make comparisons to (because we have Orton here, and they have Cutler there), and the evidence is pretty compelling.

Those that critiqued Cutler all that time obviously saw something I missed. I think a big part of it was that he has great potential in the right system and that he has flashes of greatness. He certainly does have potential and once in a while it shows.

I don't really either like or dislike the Cutler bashing (aside from our draft pick being tied to his team's performance, and my memories of how some of the fans reacted to the trade). I don't see it as a positive or a negative.

But it has been pretty compelling in terms of how I see Cutler and how I probably placed too much importance on the quarterback position to start with, and certainly placed too much emphasis on some of the things he does well while ignoring some of the things he doesn't do well.

On the other end, we have Orton who while not fast and a runner, is probably better than Cutler in a number of different areas despite what the pundits, fans and analysts said in the past.

It's clear that he does not have an accuracy problem. His arm is plenty strong, if not as strong as Cutler's and potentially stronger. He just doesn't throw every pass as though it's a Hail Mary.

He's very disciplined and very smart. He's a good leader and I think that's one of Cutler's major weaknesses as well.

I dunno... I don't care about the Cutler bashing much, except that it has shown me some things I was wrong about him on. I really did think he was all that and a bag of chips at the time despite what everyone else was saying. I do think he still has a lot of potential.

I am also increasingly convinced that even in just a straight up trade, we're as good or better with Orton than we would have been with Cutler.

As it turns out, it wasn't a straight up trade.

I guess I'm saying that the Cutler critics were right, and I didn't see that until he went to Chicago and Orton came here. I've always been in Orton's corner, but I was also a big believer in Cutler. Some of the critics on the boards... Weren't believers in Cutler.

In hindsight, they were more right than wrong.


That's really all Cutler's performance in Chicago shows me. That's really all it means to me.

I too was a huge Cutler fan during his tenure in Denver.
Something that I have noticed this season is his leadership/lack-there-of

-When the Bears are tied or are ahead, he is all up and jumping on the sidelines with his helmet on, shaking hands and hip bumping his teammates.

however....

-When the Bears are down by ten points or more, Jay can be seen sitting by himself on the bench, wearing his cap, sulking and pouting, in general just making stupid faces.

In defense of Cutler, P Manning would like hald *ss in the Bears offense right now. The play calling is for sh*t and the O-line is struggling. Mark my words, thier OC Turner will be fired at the end of this season.

Jay Cutler is also in general a bad quarterback, take it from me, also a qb. His reads are bad, he stares down his receivers, he throws off his back foot, he forces balls into locked up zones, he has physical talent, but so does Jamarcus Russel.

The funny thing with Cutler is Chicago brought him in to win games but he has never been a winner. Its all about reading the label before you buy into the hype.
