Bears Trade 2nd-round Draft Pick for Brian Bosworth
Chicago (AP): Jerry Angelo, General Manager of the Chicago Bears, again stunned the football world by announcing the Bears have traded their 2011 second-round draft pick and a player to be named later to the Seattle Seahawks for linebacker Brian Bosworth.
Bosworth, who hasn't played a down in the NFL since 1989, is rumored to have signed a four-year, $32 million dollar deal.
"This guy was the first pick in the Supplemental Draft," Angelo explained, " and would probably have been the first pick overall in the regular draft. Getting him for a second-rounder is a steal."
Asked who the "player to be named later" might be, Angelo replied, "We don't know, yet. We have about 50 candidates."
Angelo got the idea from watching film with franchise quarterback Jay Cutler. "No, not game film. We were watching the movie Stone Cold. Jay said, 'Whoa, the Boz is friggin' awesome!' I realized we could use some of that awesomeness at linebacker. He's a perfect fit for our Tampa-2."
Asked if the Seahawks even owned the rights to Bosworth, whose contract expired in 1997, Angelo hesitated, then said, "Um, I think so. At least, (Seahawk GM) Tim Ruskell didn't say they didn't."
The fact that Bosworth has missed 310 consecutive starts doesn't worry Angelo. "He says he fresh and ready to go." Asked if age was a concern, Angelo said, "Not really. I think he's about the same age as (offensive lineman Orlando) Pace."
Angelo refused to say if any more deals were in the works. "We still have a few first- and second-round picks in the next decade, so you'll just have to wait and see," he said with a smile.
Bears Coach Lovie Smith declined comment.
