  • Jon Runyan to sign with San Diego?

With offensive tackle Jeromey Clary nursing a leg injury that will sideline him indefinitely, the San Diego Chargers are stepping up efforts to sign free-agent offensive tackle Jon Runyan, a source close to the situation said Tuesday.

Runyan was en route to San Diego on Tuesday to see if he could finalize a contract with the Chargers.

The former Philadelphia Eagles starter is coming off a major knee injury but is ready to play football again.
The Chargers have placed right tackle Jeromey Clary on injured reserve and signed free agent Jon Runyan.

I could go for a little veteran backup action.

He won't sign on to be a backup.

Looks like Clary's season is over, and the staff doesn't have faith in Dombrowski / Clark to pick up the slack.

Runyan was known for years as one of the dirtiest and most feared players in the game. But he always got the job done. Maybe that mentality will rub off on the rest of the line.

I don't see why Runyan wouldn't sign on as a backup. He's currently sitting at home doing nothing at all. Dombrowski's isn't horrible. He's not the quickest pass blocker but he is a mauler. I'm cool with that.

Usually these old vets would rather sit at home than sign on as a backup. They bide their time and wait for a team desperate enough to sign them as a starter. Its just how these things work. Otherwise he would be a backup on the Eagles, Bills, Packers or another team that needed tackle depth this season.

That makes sense. However I don't think any other team had contacted him this year. This is the first time I heard his name brought up this season.

It's a good thing I put this on the 'other team' board.

Whoops! Nevermind, my bad. Looks like he's gotten his tires kicked around by a few teams in September.
