  • Getting over Cutler... What this town needs

You know, i was one of the MANY people that truly resented cutler. I went to the preseason game and booed my lungs out and just got livid when his name was mentioned.
Now lets think back before the trade. Jay cutler threw for 4500 yards. He was the poster boy for the team and the city chanted him the "future Elway". We had the exact equivalent of a man crush. We were sure he was what we were waiting for for ten years. And you can say every quarterback, past, present, and future, for the denver broncos will face the scrutiny of being compared to elway, but, cutler was especially compared to this because he had the first real flash of greatness in a qb unseen since elway. And that is why it hurt so bad when we heard of his "acting up" and his eventual trade happened.
Now Denver,CO does not ever take professional atheletes leaving kindly, especially when it is under snarkey circumstances, But when the most important man in the city gets traded, it is the most popular news event of the year or even decade. I think our intolerace torwards people leaving us(i guess what would be called abandonment issues) makes it worse and it makes us fell like it was personal and we take it very personally.
But what we dont seem to undertand is that it is not the people that make players leave here. It is their own personal life or money issues or issues with the organization's interior. There is more going on in a company than the public media knows about or should know about the private organization.
Now people say that Cutler had "no right" to leave and that is "our team" but the fact of the matter is that he had every right to do with his professional career and it is no one else's decision what the broncos do other than the broncos. THis is an unfortunate circumstance of what love and devotion bring to people. We think that we control the team.
The shock, anger, feeling of betrayal, bitterness, and just strong feelings of malevolence felt by the town was only somewhat just and should not be continued when it is just the way the professional world works. Jay Cutler is gone and their is nothing anyone could have done to prevent it in the end. I truly believe that in order to move on we must come together as a city and just wish him luck so we can enjoy the glorious sport of football as the way that it is and stop judging individual players on their decisions and past players accomplishments. Now i am not saying forget all of the great players that have enhanced your past, but embrace the now. Only then can professional football be returned to the elation it is supposed to bring and not the bitterness that it has brought us.

Interesting to hear the illusion that no one saw the shortcomings of Jay Cutler, and that we supposedly all thought he was the second coming of Elway. Unfortunately, it was clear with his arm strength remarks and general antics that he was not as great as the hypers would claim. It was obvious early on that he was the polar opposite to someone like Payton Manning - that every time things go bad he figures out why and work with his team mates to adjust.

Just a few posts from 2007 - A few of us did see a talented QB that had failure written all over him. Don't get me wrong - Cutler still has the tools to turn his career around, but right now he looks like Shanahan's biggest mistake.

Standing sulking at the sideline instead of motivating the team to pull together does not look right. Did the team spirit disappear with the Mountain Man, or will Jay take the team at least into the playoffs next year.

Jay Cutler looks fantastic at times and at others he is a disaster. Jay, Please deliver on your potential. I would hate to see a consistantly playoff bound team be converted to a sub par team.

I hope that Jay will deliver the results in the near future, but for now the most significant change to the team is the change of quarterback, and converting the team from a 10-6 team to a 6-10 team. So far he is just another Shanahan high draft choice that hasn't worked out. Irrespective, he still needs the support of fans in Denver so unrealistic pressure does not ruin another Quarterback.

For the last two games the QB play has been reminisent of a Deer caught in the headlights, and haas been some of the worst QB play I have seen in Denver for the past 20 years. I hope that he will grow into a franchice QB that can bring Broncos back to their stellar performances of the Plummer aera and the Elway aera (Early and late).

He needs to learn how to lead the team and to win footbal games. He had a mediocre college career - let him not have a ditto NFL career

Plummer was only an effective running game against Pittsburg from taking the team back to Super Bowl. They lost 17 regular season games in 3 2/3 seasons under Plummer. They have allready lost 12 under Cutler in 1 1/3 season.

Journeyman - Thanks for the fantastic journey.

For all the strengths of Cutler he still needs to bring the team to victory. 2 years from now he will be booed out of Denver - strong arm or not - if he doesn't manage to turn things around. Maybe Kubiak will hire him and make a great QB out of him if Shanny fails.

This is a team sport, and what matters is how the team performs. The quarterback happens to be a pivotal part of the team. Broncos have had lousy special teams for years, and both defence and offence has bad days.

Plummer had days where the O-line didn't protect him, and he had to claw the way back - in the AFC championship game against Pittsburg it looked like he was being gang raped led by Joey Porter, and still managed some offensive production.

Jay has potential from the physical aspect, but his composure and productivity is a far cry from the effectiveness of Brady and Rothlisberger in their second year.

Lets also not forget when comparing to history that the best QBs in Elways aera was in the NFC (Elway an exception), whereas we are demanding from Plummer/Cutler that they need to succed against Manning, Brady, Rothlisberger..., and well rounded teams like the Chargers.

It is a tall order, and very few quarterbacks in history could be dominant against those odds. Cutler needs to up the ante and at least not miss all the trips into the red zone.

Every "gunslinger" QB can produce spectacular moments as Cutler has. Lets hope he has more to offer than bullits trown into tripple coverage caught by fantastic plays by Scheffler and others

I will join in your GO BRONCOS
It was easy to get over Cutler - though I still like to see when he fails!
Thought he was a punk when he was here (My arm is stronger than Elways & too immature to let the thing with Rivers pass)

I agree. I think we all need to mature and just let the man play football on his team while going for ours. I loved Cutler when he was here, despite what anyone else says I was loving the Cutler to Marshall connection that would have lasted for years. Things didn't exactly pan out that way and now they're both gone. It's been a year and a half since Cutler was traded and most people still wish bad on him and just want to see him throw interceptions but I think we should all handle this like grown men (in some cases women) and just wish the guy the best, unless of course he's playing the Broncos. I for one have moved on. I still have my authentic Cutler jersey and will never burn it. If you ask me, he provided some fun times here in Denver, maybe not necessarily tons of wins but lots of highlights, and I will always cherish that. Good Luck, Jay.

I’m happy for Cutler. He got out of town, and now can fulfill his dream of getting crushed by 270 lb linebackers every week in Chicago

The OP is spot on. The guys that seemed to be the most mad at Cutler seem to be those that had the biggest man-crushes on him when he was here. I've defended Cutler on here a lot and I remember when I was considered the Cutler-skeptic among my friends in 06 and 07. Of course, some who've been bashing him regardless of what he did are just people who think an ungrateful handball player was the second coming of Elway.
Hoping for a defensive-minded head coach and a return to the ZBS on offense. At the very least, no more cheaters for head coach.
