  • OT: Hit in Vick Last Night. What's Up with the NFL?

Just watching the hightlights from the Eagles and Browns game last night. And was wondering if anyone else saw the PERFECT form tackle on Vick when he throws a pick and some IDIOT ref throws a dang flag for ruffing the passer? Seriously what gives with the NFL these days? I am getting a little nervous with what seams to be a good to great pass rush this year and us getting thes phantom penalties for roughing the passer. Seriously, the NFL has bent over backwards to 'protect' the QBs and if they start calling crap like this during real games, then I think we might have many of these penalties this year.

If you haven't seen it try and make a point to check it out, the Browns player makes tackle on Vick with the form that we have all been tought since we were in little league.......Its a joke.

I hear ya, it really isnt good for the league.

I worry about the fact that it is such a huge judgement call without hard and fast guide lines. I think that it opens the league up to the awful scrutiny of unfair officiating. If certain players get called for the penalties, if certain teams get called more often, etc. If it ends up deciding games based on bogus "safety" calls the league is going to look bad.

There's a reason I don't watch the NBA anymore and it has nothing to do with the tattoos and the corn rows. It's the officiating. Might as well be the WWF. I don't like seeing the NFL go in that same direction at all.

What's really funny is after he got flagged, he went and asked the ref what he was looking at. The ref then admitted that he blew the call. Good thing it wasn't a regular season game. Browns got a pick on that play, and the Eagles turned the penalty into points.

when did he admit he blew the call? because if it was before the next play, they could've waved the flag off. but i didn't see it so i'm not sure when it all occurred.

i think it's b.s. that they have taken so much of what's made football into such an awesome game out of the game. Big hits were part of the reason you would get excited to watch the game and if your team had a great defense then you were especially excited to watch your defenders lay some helpless foe out.

I still contend that John Lynch ruined Dante Hall's career with that hit. Not that he ended his career due to injury, but Hall was never the same after that and ceased being an impact player after that. Perhaps it was because Lynch's hit got into his mind and messed him up? Who knows.

And QBs should realize that they are the one player that all defenders who blitz would love to get a big hit on. Why does the QB get more special treatment than any other player? I'm not saying there shouldn't be a roughing the passer penalty or a late hit penalty or a defenseless player/unnecessary roughness penalty but this is football. It's a contact sport that involves gifted athletes that are built to take hits and understand that they play a game that could cause injury.

The league has made it a complete girl sport it seems. We might as well take away tackling altogether and not even bother with a kickoff.

We all know Moore's hit on that receiver last week was in no way shape or form a terrible hit. Ten or even five years ago, that kind of play/hit would've been lauded by everyone. I will never understand how they ruled him a defenseless receiver. In my mind, the definition of "defenseless" means he wasn't anywhere near the ball and wasn't involved in the play itself. But when you have the ball coming directly at him and bouncing off of his hands, it's impossible for you to tell me that he's defenseless. Moore was merely doing his job which is making sure he didn't catch the ball.

As far as QBs go, we all know the rule is built to protect two quarterbacks and two only: Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. We all know that "roughing" the passer penalties are called more often during Colts and Patriots games than any other combination of teams. It's ridiculous. In my mind if you want your quarterback to have protection, tell that team to build a better offensive line. We don't see Aaron Rodgers or Jay Cutler who both have terrible O-Lines getting these calls left and right.

What bothers me most about these calls is that defenders draw penalties even if they began their tackle while said player still had the ball, or while the player still had a chance to receive the ball etc. In the case of late hits on QBs, most of them come when the rushing defender has already begun his tackle, or already left the ground in pursuit and then while they're in the middle of going for the tackle, the QB gets rid of the ball. Can refs honestly sit there and try to convince anyone that a 300 pound defender can actually stop himself in mid-air from colliding with his target? Or somehow change his trajectory? I guess no one involved with football ever even so much as watched anything about Physics in their whole life. This also applies to roughing the kicker calls. Sometimes even more so because those who are coming in to block punts etc normally launch themselves forward and almost always run into the kicker.

Oh, and while we're on the subject of ridiculous rules or happenings, let's talk about how Reid got an Unsportsmanlike Conduct call for challenging that Browns touchdown. Last year that was a good call on his part. This year? "Oh, you can't do that because all scoring plays are automatically reviewed so we're going to penalize you 15 yards" That is ridiculous. Just remind him the rules changed and pick up the red flag for crying out loud. A 15 yard penalty just because the coach forgot the rules changed? That could change the entire outcome of a game you idiots. In fact, in this case, it gave the Browns a free TD because the receiver stepped out of bounds before he came back in and caught the ball. Last year Reid would have won that Challenge.

And...on top of that, they changed their own rule. So if a coach challenges a scoring play, then the booth doesn't automatically review the score. So instead of the whole "every scoring play will be reviewed" they take away the review if a coach tries to challenge? I mean, what?

Next year they'll be talking about switching to no contact football and then taking away the forward pass because "...we feel that too many injuries occur when a receiver is attempting to catch a pass and collides with a defender. A 30 yard penalty will be called on a team that lines up in the shot gun formation and throws a ball over 15 yards."

They should probably mandate that players use helmets that offer better protection. Seeing as the one study down about helmet safety had the most common NFL one as a two star which they deemed "completely unsafe"

Before they decide to change every rule

                      Who cares?

It is preseason and it wouldn't have had an affect on the outcome of the game.

To be honest, I expected to come on here and see somebody declaring that Colt McCoy was the worst QB ever and that the Browns would have the first pick in the draft.

After all, people were declaring him the next Brett Favre because he threw several touchdowns against other teams backups.

The real Browns are in Baltimore, see?

God I miss Charlie Browns illogical posts

Of course it matters. It was a blown call. If this translated to a regular season game, would you care?

Honestly? No, the Browns defense is a hodge podge of mismatched players.

So, it isn't like they are going to stop anybody. I love the Browns, don't get me wrong. It is just that the Browns made mistake after mistake this offseason and those mistakes will take a toll.

This is the new NFL, it's a no fun league.

Starting to move from one of the tough sports to a soft sport.

8.5/10 times, if anybody tackles a NFL star QB(not elite, but star), there will be a flag.

You can step on Brady's toe, I bet a flag is thrown.

These new rule changes make me sick. I understand the need to protect the players but there must be some sort of middle ground. I really don't care about calls in the preseason however if it translates to the regular season I am going to be angry.
