  • Stance on Goodell

Many people (fans) believe that Roger Goodell is ruining the game, by fining and suspending players for illegal hits. The cliche statement, as it goes, is "IT'S FOOTBALL!"

I'll be the first to say that I was on this bandwagon a year or two ago, but recently, I started thinking to myself: Is Goodell not doing what's RIGHT for the game? There have been numerous lawsuits against the NFL by former players whom suffered multiple concussions and weren't given proper treatment, leaving them with permanent damage.

How would you feel if your Grandchild's name slipped your mind and you couldn't remember momentarily? How would you feel if you got migranes in the middle of the night because you were okay'ed by the medical staff to go back in the game?

Goodell is taking care of these players, and I think it's time for the fans to appreciate that.

I miss the big hits, and I would say they were a big part of the game. With a minimum salary of 400k upwards in a game that has been known as violent I find it difficult to feel sorry for the players.

I always wonder what the 'old' players think of the game now. They played in even less strong helmets, sometimes for peanuts. I think it has gotten to a ridiculous point.

It is the same logic that states used to attempt to reduce speed limits. You're going to hurt yourself! The states always lose the battle with the voters because the truth is, the majority of drivers don't care, and they would rather take the chance and get there faster.

The only argument I could see being made for Goodell, is that he has opened the game up. The passing stats of the top QB's this year are proof of that. Fans love offense, they love big plays. If you put into effect the current rules the NFL has, that is exactly what you will get. However, it is almost making defense obsolete (I know I know NYG....but still).

Still, I wonder if Steve Atwater even bother to watch anymore. I have heard John Lynch complain about it on the air.

      IT'S FOOTBALL

But seriously I feel the concussion rules are too lenient and the necessary roughness rules are too strict.

Big hits were a big part of what made football great, and think about pump up videos. Soon they are going to have highlights of guys doing form tackles.

I also think retiree benefits should be increased.

i like goodell, i dont like some of the things he has done. but overall he is helping the game. i dont want it to become flag football tho.

would be nice to see some help to the defense. like a 7 yard bump rule instead of 5.

          This^^^

The bump rule, IMO, is stupid. If anything, though, they should move it back to show that defense is still a factor in the NFL today. There are several players that can make a living off big hits that are legal, but you can't take everything away from the defense. Give us our 7 yards at least.

Awful commissioner. Mainly because he is dishonest. He claims to "care" about the players safety yet lobbies for two extra regular season games. His motives are clear. He is thinking like a business man not some compassionate person who cares about the health of the players.

He has recently been quoted saying that he hears the fans cries for two extra reg season games. I know a lot of fans who love the way it is set up now. Preseason is needed for young, unproven players. Goodell is a snake who is only looking to expand profits. I don't buy for a minute that he cares about making the game safer.

I think they should take a seriously look into mandating a safer helmet for the players to wear. The ones they wear are mostly garbage. Then take a look at changing the rules of the game.

I feel the same way. Goodell is just trying to make more money, which is good, but I feel it is starting to hurt the integrity of the game. No more big hits takes away a major factor is why the game is great.

As to the lawsuits, I dont get how the players never had to sign a waiver before saying they know there are dangers involved with playing football and wont sue. You have to do it at other levels of football.

better pro bowl, yes. 2 more games wouldn't be good, though. players don't want it, because they said it would increase chances of being hurt, and lower the quality of games down the stretch. and that's even considering they'd be paid more.

I think he's dead on right and have from the beginning. Whatever it takes to make the game safer, I'm all for it. Especially when it comes to the head, neck, and spine, which can't always be fixed with surgery. And they affect your brain, your personality, who you are.

if teams got back to tackling fundamentals instead of giving up 7-10 extra yards punching at the ball or lowering the boom on one play while getting burned four times this would be a moot point.

players are more worried about trying to make a huge hit that they forgot how to make a real tackle. Im sorry about I dont disagree with what Goodell is doing. Yes I want to see old style football but that being said, the game isnt fun when all these starters are getting injured because someone tries to lay a huge hit or illegal late hit. Even though he wasn't hit big or late, look at Colts this year and how boring that team was to watch. Now if Manning was playing they be the exciting team they have been to watch the past decade. Just imagine Tebow/ Bailey/ Von and Doom getting hurt for stupid hits. Denver would be so boring. PLayers are bigger and faster and the hits are getting bigger and harder.

If you wrap up on a hit, it's nearly impossible for it to be illegal. Facemask will be up, looking at the target. Hit will be with the facemask and front of the should pads (chest area). Blow the man out of his shoes and slap him into the ground.

No launching, no head-butting the helmet, no throwing the shoulder.

That's what I like to see.

Exactly! This is what the 49ers do and some people called tham the best tackling defence in the last 15 years. They rarely gave up extra yards because when they went to tackle you they made sure to take you to the ground not go for the highlight reel hit!
