  • Kansas City.....How Good Can They Be With A Legit QB?

They're currently #1 in one category.......this coming draft. Sad to say, a lot of things have to go wrong to be in that position. And to be honest, for the last few years they have had a ton of opportunities to right the ship. How many high draft picks does it take? Look at the recent list (and I may be missing one or two):

    Tyson Jackson - 3rd overall
    Eric Berry - 5th overall
    Glenn Dorsey - 5th overall
    Dontario Poe - 11th overall
    Branden Albert - 15th overall

Hey, some of these guys are pretty good, but still, this is just a small portion of all their recent picks, and given where they ended up, they also had plenty of good 2nd and 3rd round opportunities I'm sure. After all, a high 2nd should be a solid pick, right?

Plus they do have some real positives. Jamaal Charles is a stud (and is currently 6th best in rushing). Hali and Johnson and Bowe and Lilja and Flowers are not unknowns. And if you look at this year's stats, the team is 7th in rushing, and 7th against in passing. Clearly they have some issues moving the ball in the air, and defending against the run. No escaping those facts.

But say they get a quality QB in their system, I don't doubt this team can make a big rebound in the coming year (or two). They have been terrible in the QB capacity. Imagine the impact of a Peyton Manning in KC, plus another quality WR. At 7th in rushing, I am sure they'd jump way up in passing, from their position of 31st in the NFL, and in scoring, where they are last in the NFL! Sure they have some defensive rushing issues, but make a couple of changes there, and who knows how much this team could rise. I would think 500 football wouldn't be a stretch with a few player changes. Fill a couple of other holes and in two years they are very competitive.

Anyway.......they have done a terrible job of progressing given all the quality picks they received. Looks like they again will have a shot to prove otherwise this spring, when they may have the 1st and 33rd picks.

Hate to say it, but they are not doing much more than Oakland in that regard.

They just hate drafting QBs in the first round. I could see them passing up a QB this year too and taking Te'o. That would be a terrific young defense. I'd argue that Te'o in the first and a QB in the 2nd would be much more beneficial than taking a QB first overall.

What QB would be worth taking that early this year? I can't think of one that is draft eligible. They aren't that far off, IMO. I think a new scheme plus two new high draft picks will be a big step in the right direction.

I think the Broncos are evidence of how fast something can turn around. Of course, having a franchise QB is a big part of the equation, which you inferred. The problem for most team is that there are really only a handful of franchise QB's. The Chiefs should just take the BPA in the draft. They also should consider trading down and stocking up on a couple of first rounders because there is no QB worthy of the #1 pick in this draft.

Walters Football has KC picking QB Geno Smith. I am not familiar with him. Do you folks think he's the answer?

The Chiefs need good quarterbacking, but this year's draft class isn't great. Maybe they sign Michael Vick and draft Mike Glennon who might be there in the second round? Geno Smith is a possibility. It all depends on their evaluation of the draft pool.

I think it will be interesting. I am not saying they are a good team right now, but 2 and 12 seems out of whack given all the high picks they've had, the decent stats they have produced in their run game and pass D, and the quality of a number of their players. But just proves how important a decent QB can be.

He has a lot of physical ability and can definitely be successful but I wouldn't take him first overall. He seemed unaware of pressure in the pocket when I watched him this season and that's the main thing I dislike about him. If KC does take him 1st overall though, they have to get a HC that can develop a QB and stick with him.

Thx bud........guess Barkley isn't the #1 draftable QB anymore.

Geno Smith isn't #1 overall material

KC will once again NOT take a QB in the first

probably won't for a while, maybe they'll get lucky and be awful and in position to draft Johnny Football in a couple years

This should be instructive to all who focus exclusively on individual players. A study of the Bronco roster shows a number who came into the league undrafted. Getting the best players is a start, but there is much more involved than that when it comes to winning.

Even with poor QB play, they will be picking #1 which isn't just on Cassell.

Obviously a good QB helps any team, but I think their offense is very weak. Charles is a very good back, but their OL is patch-work and the biggest problem they have is a lack of targets.

Bowe is said to be leaving at the end of the year, their only other receiver (Baldwin) has never progressed to a capable outside starting receiver.

Moeki is an OK TE, but won't stretch the field.

The D has some good players, but they lost #1 CB Carr and players like Tyson and Poe look pretty average.

They were a playoff team before the Broncos won the last two division titles. Cassel was even a Pro Bowl selection in 2010, managing an offense that had an elite running game. I thought they would be much better than what we're seeing this season. Obviously, they need a franchise quarterback.

Maybe the head coach must be upgraded, judging by game plans that keep Jamaal Charles on the sideline (and then Romeo Crennel says he does not know why Charles did not get more opportunities during the game). It might be another case of a good coordinator losing control when he has to manage the entire team.

I think they fired Todd Haley too early, and now they already looking for another head coach to replace Crennel. Scott Pioli is not getting the job done and it looks like he was just a product of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. Pioli started with Tyson Jackson as a top 3 pick and will end with Dontari Poe as the 11th overall pick. Two questionable moves, though we must wait a few years to judge Poe's development. Pioli also showed excessive faith in Matt Cassel.

I believe the Chiefs would benefit from a 4-3 defense. Tyson Jackson would play strongside DE (similar to Ayers/Wolfe), his position in college, Tamba Hali would be their Dumervil and Justin Houston might be able to play as a SLB, similar to Von Miller's role. Poe could work with another DT next to him instead of playing like a 3-4 NT.

For the record, I'm not hoping for KC to find their way anytime soon. But I am surprised how far they've fallen, given all those draft picks, and given what some of us expected from Pioli.

But hey, take your time KC, SD and Oakland. Take your time.

The only threat to me is SD.

I stated in the off-season the Chiefs would be bad, so its no surprise to me. They and Oakland need to find a QB first which is very tough, then add some pieces. This could take a long time.

SD has the QB, which is a great place to start. I think he gets little help though with a horrible OL and lack of targets.

They need a new HC, get a new LT and some other OL fill-ins, and go from there.

Its hard to see anyone competing with Denver next season in the west, barring a PM injury.

Chiefs have more problems than just the quarterbacking. Poor coaching and a dwindling defense isn't helping. Letting Carr go was a bigger mistake than people think.
