Josh Cribbs unhappy Cleveland Browns keep rebuilding

Count Josh Cribbs among those wishing the Cleveland Browns would pump the brakes on yet another regime change.

"I hate that we rebuild every year," Cribbs told The Associated Press on Thursday. "It's not a good recipe for successful football."

Cribbs has been a fan favorite since joining the Browns in 2005. The return specialist has seen Romeo Crennel fired and replaced by Eric Mangini, who was fired and replaced by Pat Shurmur. Now it's widely believed Shurmur won't survive the next round of cuts orchestrated by new Browns owner Jimmy Haslam III and CEO Joe Banner.

"A lot of people don't get a fair shake in this business, whether it be the quarterbacks or the regime," Cribbs said. "(Shurmur and Co.) came in during the lockout, now the owner decided to sell the team. It's just so unfortunate the way the nature of the business is.

"But I'll tell you one thing, we're geared up to win this last game, to give it our best shot because this win, a sweep of Pittsburgh, would do a lot for this city and might do a lot for the coaching staff as well. Finishing strong is the biggest thing at this point."

We posted earlier about Shurmur understanding his time in Cleveland might be over. His full quotes arrived later in the process.

"I think we've made improvements," Shurmur said of his two seasons with the Browns. "Some may say not fast enough, but I think we've made improvements. I think we came into a less-than-ideal situation when we got here. ... We have not won enough football games, and I know that's the way this thing works, but in our situation, I see improvement, and I'll leave it at that."

The Browns (5-10) have burned through regimes in manic fashion since returning to the NFL in 1999. They've hired five coaches and one interim coach since their relaunch. On the field -- and even more sordid – the team is threatening to start its 18th quarterback in 14 seasons if Thad Lewis gets the nod Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. It's enough to make grown men cry.

Maybe the next round of changes flips the magic switch, but Cribbs -- and an agitated, restless fan base -- have seen this act before.

I think the Browns have something to build on. They have something to build on with Weeden and Richardson. They really need help at WR though. They have some decent guys, but they need a legitimate #1.

I honestly think they're only 1 or 2 players away from being a playoff contender. Weeden will be better next year. If they can just add 1 or two pieces they will be in prime position to contend for the North for the next few years. The Ravens and Steelers are trending down with older players.

Cleveland is one or two players away? Well, picture this. Mike Lombardi becomes the GM. Lombardi is on record as being against the Haden, Gordon, Richardson, and Schwartz selections. Would you want to play somewhere were you are not wanted/appreciated?

The team is heading in the wrong direction.

I'm not arguing that point Charlie. I'm just saying that if the Browns can stick with the FO they have, or find someone who will build with those guys, then they have a shot at changing the culture, maybe even as early as next year.

It would take someone with rocks in their head to try to ship those players out. Is McDaniels on the Browns radar?

The Browns have made good moves toward building a winning team.

Lombardi as GM and............. McDaniels as Head Coach?

I actually did this in Madden. Made McDaniels, and traded for Ryan Mallet. Dont worry Charlie, I got the Browns in the playoffs right now.

Maybe it isn't so easily conveyed online. The answer is hell no to Lombardi and a hell no to McDaniels. That road has been travelled before again and again and again. First with Bill Bellichick, himself, then following his firing with Romeo Crennel. Then, yet again, with Eric Mangini. Enough is enough. You can't keep moving backwards year in and year out.

McDaniels would be doing two stupid things all at once. First, it would be once again going after the Parcells/Bellichick tree. Second, it would be once again ignoring the need for an experienced head coach. Yea, McDaniels coached the Broncos for nearly two seasons. But, it was a complete failure. Cleveland needs a head coach with experience that has had success - not a head coach that is a failure.

Lombardi would be the worst move for GM. It is better to keep Heckert. Lombardi is a horrible general manager and has been run out of town in every place that he has held the position.

I hope Lombardi gets the job. Sorry, I just want him off TV.

I didn't think Heckert had made any really poor decisions. I guess you could blame him for Shurmur still being there.

I think teams will be very picky with McDaniels if they talk to him about the head coaching position. They may see what he did in Denver (including the 49ers incident) and be more careful. I don't see any team hiring him to be their head coach.

                      GM? I want Heckert.

But, he was fired. So, anybody but Lombardi.

Head coach? None of those college hotshots. O'Brien isn't ready for the leap and Chip Kelly I think will be a disaster like Spurrier.

I want an experienced coach - somebody like John Gruden.
