Secondly, if you told every player in the NFL, that if there was a 1 in 2 chance that they would have a shortened lifespan, or a diminished quality of life compared to what they would have if they never played another game, before they sign a contract, I'd bet dollars to donuts that most of them would sign anyway. We're supposed to feel responsible for that in your opinion?

You can make it as safe as you want. You can kill the sport in it's entirety even. You aren't going to stop bad things from happening. Nobody is celebrating shortened lifespans and diminished quality of life, so you can get up off your high horse.

How about all of the people that work manual labor in this country, that will live with shortened lifespans or quality of life issues because of the hazards that come with the territory of the position? Construction workers with back and knee problems. Factory workers with respiratory issues. I guess if you live in a home, you're ignoring the issues as well. I guess since you clearly own a computer or smartphone to post on here, you're complacent in recognizing the issues of working conditions in China.

    Gimme a break.
    Boom. CP to you sir.
Here we go Broncos Here we go!

on one of my first days at work i accidentally got in the way of a 400lb intact bull reindeer. i was run over (constituting a health risk). i considered the fact that i had inadvertently cut off his natural escape route. i came to the conclusion that it was my own foolish mistake and not my employers fault. i resolved to continue working but be more careful

neil smith was well compensated for his profession, he was put in harms way. after his first concussion he had the opportunity to quit or drastically change the way he played. he decided to keep playing

maybe ill get run over by another reindeer

it still wont mean its my employer's fault
I herd/wrestle reindeer - its just too bad it doesnt pay well

MOST PEOPLE DON'T. It is morally and ethically reprehensible to ignore such glaring issues with a sport that is PURELY for entertainment,
Ummm...this argument can be made for most sports.

I suffered two concussions while I was in the Marines, and still to this day have migraines that I never had before that time period, maybe I should sue the military for not telling me that getting my head hit while doing dangerous things is bad... I think those guys know that their lives will be shortened, this is not new news, its old news while watching some of these guys that are now suing play, the news of old players in their 40s and 50s not being able to walk was out there and prevalent just like soldiers know they have a chance of dying just like fighters know they have a chance of being like Mohammed Ali and not being able to formulate a complete sentence... suing for something that happened while you made millions to play a brutal sport is ignorant and should be thrown out of the courts immediately. If these guys weren't smart enough to know they had a chance a long term injury then they truly are morons.
          GO BRONCOS AFC Champs!!!

Workers compensation. Player was injured on the job. It doesn't matter if he knew the risks. I speak from personal experience from mlb.

Workers compensation, disability benefits and the NFL's 88 Plan, which pays for medical and custodial care of retired NFL players with dementia, is all worked out during their collective bargaining agreements.

The player attorneys are seeking to prove that their clients face health problems due to negligence that extended beyond typical workplace hazards.

The total number of plaintiffs in those cases is 3,356, which includes players, spouses and other relatives or representatives.

This is a money-grab, and has little to nothing to do with long term care of these players.

These lawsuits tick me off so bad. These guys can't tell me they didn't know the sport has risks, you freaking strap on body armor to play, come on! I never made it to the 'big time' but played Div. II NCAA ball. This game is violent that is part of the mystic and the love we have for this game. It also frustrates me because these lawsuits are affecting how the game is played, everytime a player makes a good hit you see a flag. Don't get me wrong research into making the game safer as far as improved equipment, better medical staffs, more focus on 'little league', etc. is all good. Heck I benefited from this, I still have my first Revolution Helmet, when they came out is was literally a revolution to the game. But, its starting to go to far, I mean seriously the NFL is considering scrapping kickoffs and punts. There is a reason flag football isn't played on national tv.

Please please please tell me you are a granmother.
To the question at hand though, pretty sure there was enough evidnece from watching "punc-drunk" boxers to know too many shots to the head are a bad thing, many of these athletes are generously compensated for putiing their health on the ine to play a game for a living, they knew going in it is a risk.
