Mind you this is not a bash Peyton or Brady thread ... I rank them BOTH in the top 3 all-time behind Montana and think they are the greatest rivalry in NFL history. Please take the time to read this post because I feel I make a good case here.
I know these two are compared always with Brady usually winning like a 65/35 split with people who rank them, but take a look at some interesting points. Brady had success early on in his career. From 2000-2004 he looked like one of the biggest winners in history. I'm a firm believer, however, that alot of his success early on wasn't because of how superior he was, but the fact that he had a complete team that helped him throughout. They had one of the scariest D's in the entire NFL, a clutch kicker, and a QB who was a very good game manager at the time. Once spygate ended and they lost that great defense, he and the Patriots had struggles. Ever since 05, Brady had the same problem Manning did with having to do so much to keep your team in it. The Patriots were not balanced anymore and everything came down to whether or not Brady will do enough to get his team the win. He was the team and still is. Since 2005 here is how each of Brady's postseasons ended:
2005: Lost to Denver in Divisional Round. Threw 2 picks and 1 TD.
2006: Lost to The Colts in the AFC title game. Threw a pick on a game winning drive attempt against the Colts. He threw 1 TD and 1 INT.
2007: Lost to The Giants in the Superbowl after going 16-0. Biggest ch.oke job ever. The scoring juggernauts were held to 14 points. Brady throws 1 whopping TD and doesn't have enough time to come back and win it.
2008- INJURED
2009- Lost to the Ravens in the Wildcard round. Brady throws 3 picks and 2 TD's and only throws for 150 yards.
2010- Lost to The Jets in the divisional round. Throws 2 TD's and a pick, but it's not enough to get them the win.
2011- Outplayed by Flacco in the AFC title game and then loses the Superbowl again to the Giants. Has an ok game with 2 TD's and an INT, but another stunning loss that he took little heat for.
2012- Lost to the Ravens in the AFC title game. 1 TD and 2 INT's in the game ... Including a crucial pick in the endzone towards the end of the game.
I don't know what all this "CLUTCH" talk comes from after his Superbowl win in 04? The guy had an excellent defense and great kicker those Superbowl years and once they relied on Brady to carry the team they haven't won since. I'm saying this because everyone gives Peyton grief about his playoff performance, but Brady isn't Mr. Clutch that alot of people portray him to be. Mannings D stepped up one year for him and that was the Superbowl year. Other then that the guy has had to carry all his teams on his back. And now you see after those years with a balanced team, there hasn't been much success.
Peyton Manning from 05-on:
2005: Lost to Steelers in a game where the kicker missed an easy field goal at end. Peyton takes all the grief as usual. 1 TD, 0 INT's.
2006: Won The Superbowl and made an amazing comeback in the AFC title game against Brady. Threw for a TD and an INT in the Superbowl
2007: Lost to the Chargers in a game where he threw 400 yards, 3 TD's, and 2 picks including a 4th quarter TD to get them the lead. Yet again Colts D sc.rews up and loses it for them.
2008: Lost to the Chargers in a game where Manning threw a touchdown and no INT's. It went to overtime though where San Diego won the coin toss and scored on the first play. Manning didn't have a chance to perform a comeback
2009: Got to the Superbowl and lost to New Orleans. Threw 330 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT. Threw a pick 6 at the end when trying to tie it up. Tough break. His fault on that one.
2010: Lost to the Jets in ANOTHER game where he got his team the lead in under a minute left in game and Special Teams and defense scr.ews it up and lets Sanchez drive down on them. Throws 1 TD, 0 INT's.
2012: Lost to Ravens and threw 3 TD's and 2 INT's. Got his team the lead in the 4th quarter and forced Baltimore to use all there timeouts with only a minute left in the game. Denvers D scr.ews up and they go to overtime.
ONE time out of those years it was Peyton's fault. But the ignorance of the media and people who dislike Peyton tend to take the easy way out and blame him.
Since 05:
Manning has 1 more Superbowl to Brady.
Since 05 In those eliminations games mentioned above Peyton did more to try and get his team the win:
Peyton: 11 TD's, 6 INT's.
Brady: 9 TD's, 8 INT's.
Bottom line is Peyton is looked at to be a cho.ker which he is far from. Look at those elimination games in the Peyton years I mentioned. Most of them were NOT his fault.
