  • Franchise Tag Compensation Speaks To The Importance Of The Pass Game

Here's the current Franchise Tag compensation in order of value, and by position (in $million):

    QB - 14.9

    DE - 11.18

    CB - 10.85

    WR - 10.54

    OL - 9.83

    LB - 9.62

    DT - 8.45

    RB - 8.22

    S - 6.92

    TE - 6.07

I bolded the first four, but I think you could easily have made the same assessment.....it's clearly a passing game, and the better you throw it and defend it, the better you get paid. And though I did not look back in terms of the $'s per position over the years, I have a strong hunch that these four positions alone have moved up the scale over the years, in terms of salary.

Sure some of the lower positions (on this chart) are also involved with passing, but I would contend that top quality passing and defending of the pass are best defined by those four positions.

Not surprising, but at the same time, it is interesting that RBs have seemingly slipped near the bottom. Then again, that probably is also a result of the changing game, in that you tend to have multiple backs these days, versus one high paid load carrier.

Where do we fit? Well, we have the high paid QB, and solid pass rush (whether it be DE or OLB). If Champ maintains his level of play, we have some good CBs for this year, although this is an area that may require some investment. And our WRs are fast becoming high quality players, but maybe it's time to add one more speedy type to the mix. Interesting how one NFL analyst saw a Wes Welker type putting us over the top (in our bid for the SB). Probably not going to happen, but would be a pretty interesting O with him in the lineup!

As for the Oline (the next group down).....hey, that's our franchise tag, and in this case, a very important one to the pass game, and as we all know.....the blind side. And to be honest, the LT is the highest paid OLiner, so I am not sure how the OLiners are calculated, but clearly the LTs are the key pass protectors (unless you have lefty at the helm).

Just some simple analysis here.....the game does change.

I'm a little surprised the tag # is the same for a LT as it is for an OG. I wonder how long the league will be able to get away with that.

I looked it up elsewere and saw the same values. I still believe they have to have separate salary classes for Tackles vs Guards and Centres. Maybe someone can find. But if they are grouped for a reason, I think it's high time to re-calculate. Tackles have to be a little more valuable.

Tackles are a lot more valuable. It's the same reason DE's aren't on the same pay scale as DT's with the franchise tag. There are usually several OT's taken in the first 10 picks. How often are OG's taken in the first ten picks? Once every ten years?

I think Clady has a reason to be irritated.

It's going to be the same this year, even if Warmack makes the top 10.

This too is interesting to me. When I was a young person (before dirt), Guards were the better player, and tackles were usually much less athletic, and if nothing else.....big.

And yes. Tackles are easily the most valuable Oliners.

Oline has been grouped together for several years now I disagree with it because then your centers and guards get over paid in a tag situation. Also if a guard/center is making less it won't effect the tag because its an average of the top five salaries (I believe)

It is interesting to me that DEs are separate from DTs, whereas Oliners are bunched. I guess that could be said about every position. I think it would also be interesting which position is worth more these days - ILB or OLB. In a 4/3 I'd expect to go for the MLB, but that wouldn't be the case for our current team. In general, in the old days, the MLB was easily the primary LB, but these days the OLB is becoming a serious weapon. The Von Miller / DWares / T Suggs of the world are likely paid like top level DEs.

The name of the thread is misleading.

The tag values are an average of IIRC the top 5 players at that position PERIOD.

It is a consistence at best they relate to those that pass and catch.

If anything it could be argued that in NE case the TE is the most important position and I'm sure that John E and Sharpe would agree.

I don't think it's misleading at all. It still speaks to the value of the top players at every position, which is closely aligned to overall group value. It's not a perfect measure but it is not a random thing either. The reason the top 5 players at each of these positions is paid so much has a lot to do with the importance of the position. For example, a shutdown Corner is hugely valued. So is a relentless sack machine at DE . The QB is self-explanatory, and the WR is all about the changing game, with some guys dominating the O.
