Has the NFL ever kicked tires on a change in the salary cap, as to having something like 25% of a retained players cap space not count against your teams cap if he signs a long term deal there?
It would encourage teams to draft, develop, and retain their players. Players would not have to be convinced to take a hometown discount, but it would be reflected in the cap space.
Example, Miller signs 5 year 100 million, we would get hit 75 mill on our cap, as we drafted him and worked out an extension. If someone stole him for the same contract, they would be hit the full 100 mill. Seems like that would be fair?
