So sorry to hear this. Was hoping he would pull through. RIP Tray.
Baltimore Ravens cornerback Tray Walker passed away on Friday afternoon from injuries sustained in a Thursday evening motorbike accident. Walker was 23 years old.
The accident occurred shortly before 8 p.m. ET at an intersection in Miami, Florida when Walker, who was riding a dirt bike, collided with a Ford Escape. As of Thursday night, detectives were investigating the incident to see if the driver of the Escape ran a stop sign. Walker was not racing, and alcohol was not involved in the accident. Walker was not wearing a helmet.
Walker was taken to a hospital following the accident, where he was declared to be in critical condition. Walker underwent surgery during the night but was pronounced dead at 5 p.m. ET on Friday, his agent Ron Butler said (via the Baltimore Sun).
"He loved his college, his teammates, coaches," Butler said of Walker, per Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. "He was big in terms of giving back."
Walker, a Miami native who attended college at Texas Southern, was selected by the Ravens in the fourth-round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Walker played in eight games last season as a rookie, primarily on special teams.
"We have two sons not too much older than Tray, and we can't imagine how much his family is suffering," Ravens owner Steve Bisciottis said in a statement. "This is so sad. The right words are hard to find at a time like this. As much as we can comfort Tray's mom and the rest of his family, we will."
Ravens players expressed their grief over social media on Friday evening.
"I just heard the news," posted Ravens receiver Marlon Brown on Twitter. "I can't believe it. I was just with him two weeks ago. That was like my little bro. RIP Tray Walker."
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who played with Walker at Miami Northwestern High School, offered a heartfelt goodbye on Instagram.
"Today we lost more than an athlete, we lost a son, a brother, a teammate, a classmate, a friend, and a GREAT person. You proved that something positive can come out of Miami Northwestern and off of 71st Street," Bridgewater wrote. "You were loved by many in the community and looked upon as a role model. It saddens me today knowing you were just scratching the surface and about to reach your full potential, but I know we serve a Mighty God who sits high and looks low and he has a plan for us all to prosper. Continue to watch over your family, teammates and loved ones. RIP Tray aka FreshKid. My condolences to the Walker family."
Ravens receiver Steve Smith also issued a statement on Friday evening.
"Times like this make you hug your kids tighter," Smith said. "A mother lost her son today, and a family lost their brother, including us, his extended family. Tray had a bright future ahead of him outside of football and was a guy who lit up the room with his personality. I will miss seeing him every day and seeing that bright smile he always wore. I pray that his family can find peace. Rest well, Tray."
