Defense wins Championships... except... this year???

Defenses win championships when the D is that outstanding. This year, there was no D that was essentially immovable like we were last playoffs and the Seahawks were in 2013.

Interesting, I'm listening to Boston sports media right now and they are saying their defense is not as good as their stats and that because they have played crappy teams all year they are worried about this AFCCG against the Steelers.

A little off topic but they were also saying that Brady has not done well in the playoffs and has thrown 27 INTS in 22 playoff games. Just sayin because I'm hearing it right now.

Agreed.Brady struggled at times in the Texans game and to me they should start underdogs in the Superbowl should they progress pass the Steelers(which wont be easy).I would favor the Packers or the Falcons ahead of them.I mean odds wise aswell as dislike.

It will be the Patriots D that wins them the Subpar Bowl, should they make it. Sure, Brady and Co. will put points, but I expect their D to hold GB/ATL offense to 3TDs or less. Of course, they have to get by PITT first whom I expect to give them fits

A true franchise QB, with an average defense will balance that out. You look at Brady, Ben, Rodgers, and Ryan and you're probably looking at the 4 best QBs in the league right now.

One thing I meant to say yesterday is I think some of you take the term too literally.

Defense wins championships doesn't necessarily mean the team with an elite defense that goes and puts points on the board like ours did last year.

It's really just who is playing the best defense at the right time.

For example. In 2006 Indy had the worst run defense in the NFL during the regular season.

In the postseason that same D got hot at the right time and turned into beast mode. They didn't allow any teams to rush for over 100 yards and held everyone but New England below 20 points. And if memory serves correctly they shutout Brady in the second half after an awful first half.

And Manning statistically was not all that great that postseason.

So it was really major credit to Indys defense that won them that championship despite being awful all year.

In 98 when the Broncos went 14-2 they allowed around 4.6 yards per carry on the ground. Yet they held the dirty bird offense to 6 points through 3 quarters in the SB and 19 overall.


The teams left may not scare anyone on D. But it's still most likely going to come down to whoever can show up at the right time. That's what all the talk is in the GB Atlanta game. Both offenses are elite and going to put up points. But which defense is going to be able to get that one extra stop or turnover to change the game?

Unless of course both teams score every drive and the team with the ball last wins. Then I'll say it's all offense.

But that's the true meaning of the term defense wins championships.

It just won't be an elite defense this year like Denver and Seattle.

I think the Falcons have the advantage on defense because overall they are healthy. At the same time Aaron Rodgers playing lights out and has the knack for winning on the last drive/play.

Well if the Atlanta offense does what it has been doing its only going to take a stop or two. They aren't going to completely shut it him down, just stop GB on a couple of drives and they should be in good shape. I'd be shocked if the Green Bay defense shuts down Atlanta.

The saying usually is true... but I think it's more likely "the hottest team in the league wins Championships".

Look at the Ravens a few years ago, heck even we got hot at the right time. Watch out for Green Bay to also prove this statement true....

Why do people use the ravens as an example? Lol they won one out of their last four or five games that season. Of course they were "hot" in the playoffs. Every team that ever wins a tournament is hot during that time.

Nobody had Baltimore coming into Denver and beating us on our home turf. We had won 11 straight games to finish the regular season - plus a first round bye with home field advantage. We know the rest...That 'Mile High Miracle' from Flacco to Jones gave them HUGE confidence and momentum and it propelled them through the rest of the playoffs.
