Why Michael Bennett (SEA) skips voluntary OTAs

I came across this tweet from a Seahawks writer about Michael Bennett that I thought was fascinating.

As much as don't like the Hawks and as much as Bennett is known for being particularly vocal on and off the field, his reply to the writer was amazing and shows a lot of insight and wisdom about being a husband, father, and planning on life after football.

That is amazing. Actually both Bennett brothers are very deep thinkers and people. They appear to be pretty out there, if you will, but I saw a film on them and they both are incredible guys with varied interests and talents. I believe Martellus is an artist and a poet and Michael is a writer and uses a blog to get his message out there.

They are voluntary OTAs, but it's work like in any other profession. Teams are not allowed to keep players in the facility for more than 6 hours during OTAs. So, I don't know why Bennett can't go to work for 6 hours and then be a father and husband the rest of the day like everyone else. It is entirely possible to work for a maximum of 6 hours, especially when such work already takes care of your body, and still be able to build your social life.

That is a fair point though, I don't think anybody would have a problem with him choosing family and teaching over partying.

But those six hours occur at what time of the day? They start in the morning - that's when parents fix their kids breakfast, or do all kinds of other activities. And when you get done with a NFL practice, you're beat up and tired. For reference, many athletes retire when they could eek out another year or so just because they're beat up and it impacts their ability to go out and do things. I think your stance, while valid in some degrees, is a little harsh.
