Josh McDaniels - Pretty Good Career!

In spite of his "controversial " 2 years as our Head Coach, Josh McDaniels is having a pretty darn good career. He has 5 SB rings, and is clearly one of the better OCs in football. Him and Brady are a tight bond (and yes, that will include the odd shouting match!), and as for X and O's, are clearly on the same page. Like him (and The Pats) or not, he has firmly established his reputation again, and will definitely be considered for head Coaching jobs going forward. Whether or not he chooses to apply might have something to do with Belichick and Brady's continued success.

No doubt, his time here was not so special, but I attribute part of that to having too much control, while not having a strong mentor at the time, who could have made him rethink some of his decisions. Not saying he would have been successful, but I feel like he made rookie errors, some of them that should have been challenged more assertively.

Anyway....not a Pats fan. Just giving a guy some credit for his obvious skills/talent. After all, he has taken a ton of criticism from our fan base, much of deserved. But no point dwelling on the negative, given one's success elsewhere.

Not sure if you are asking me the question....but McDaniels has won 5 SB rings, not all at OC. Point is, 5 rings is what I would call a decent career, no matter what role you play.

Great players make great coaches. Every bit of evidence we have to go by shows us that without Tom Brady, Josh McDaniels is just a guy. In his 2 years in Denver, he was abysmal, a colossal failure. Then when he left, he went to the St Louis Rams, and again was nothing but a failure and gone after one very poor season. Tom Brady has helped mediocre coaches get promoted around the league for a long time, and they ALL constantly go on to achieve nothing. Josh McDaniels I guess has some nice accolades next to his name, however they are Tom Bradys accolades, he was along for the ride.

I was a little unsure if I should post this thread in Broncos Country.....but hey, we are mostly adults and smart younger folks, and he did share 2 years with us. Two memorable years for sure, for the wrong reasons. But I happen to watch The Pats a bit more than I should, because they show Pats games a lot, and I have had Brady in FF. And I can tell you, as a non fan, that O is complex and innovative. That is why you can not hang your hat on many individual Pats, especially RBs, because leaders there will change things on you. And I wrote another thread lately asking who will be a real challenge for The Pats again this year....because, quite frankly, there is not much competition for them in The AFC.

But back to JM.....I am giving him credit for being more than a 2 year HC in Denver. As I mentioned, he would have done better with some guidance that he apparently did not have when he was here. But that's on him for sure. However I am quite sure that if you are a pats fan, and there a tons of them, you will think JM is a quality OC.

That isn't my take, those are the facts. As I said without Tom Brady, Josh McDaniels has been just a guy, he has been fired twice, on two attempts at it. The difference here on what I am saying and what you are saying is that you are reaching and projecting his success based on no evidence. It has sort of become the popular mantra surrounding Josh McDaniels that if he gets another crack at being a head coach, he will be successful, why ? There is no evidence from the one time he was a head coach to suggest this.

I do agree though that certain coaches, and the systems they run are better suited to certain players skill sets, and this is obviously the case with Josh McDaniels and Tom Brady. However I do think this could be questioned considering that Tom Brady had 2 Superbowl rings before Josh McDaniels even called a play for him. I would also question how much of the "innovative" offense that Josh McDaniels runs is even his. Josh McDaniels was a one year Quarterback coach before calling plays in 2005, a season which the Patriots didn't even name an Offensive Coordinator. I feel like the systems and bases for Tom Brady being the player he is pre-dates Josh McDaniels.

I also don't buy into the offense that Josh McDaniels runs is "innovative". I think often times people are unqualified to discuss these things and it isn't a sleight on anyone, it's just misinformation and an overreaction by media who often times push a talking point without any depth of knowledge to the topic they are talking about. This "innovative" offense didn't look anything other then mediocre with Matt Cassel at the helm, or with Kyle Orton at the helm, or with Sam Bradford at the helm. In what way is it an "innovative" offense ? In what way is it dramatically different to what any other team is doing ? The difference is, when these lesser, mediocre players run his offense, it doesn't look good.

I will give Josh McDanies credit for the chemistry and understanding of the player he calls plays for, his relationship with Tom Brady is excellent, however lets not pretend that Tom Brady isn't making most coaches look great, and honestly better then they are. As I said earlier, the Tom Brady effect is a real thing. New England Patriot coaches who have received promotions, and went on to have very limited success is a constant, and something which I am sure we will see again in the future.

OK, I'll simplify......Josh McDaniels has won 5 SB rings, makes loads of money, has a great rapport with Tom Brady and probably Bill Belichick, and has contributed to the championships.

I'd call that a "pretty good career".
