  • Wade Phillips to be let go from LA Rams

Interesting to me that Wade is being let go. I wonder how the Rams plan to improve their DC position. As we know, Wade was revered by his players here and we were all surprised when the Broncos too didn't renew Wade with all his success here.

So what gives...........why can't he keep a job. Maybe it's just the way the NFL is anymore.

Wade Phillips' time in Los Angeles has come to an end. The Rams have informed the defensive coordinator that he will not be retained, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per a source informed.
The beatings will continue until morale improves....

Absolutely not! He is a good defensive coordinator but not nearly as good as people think. And there's a reason that he keeps finding himself unemployed. This is the second time a team has let him go less than a year after they were in the Super Bowl.

I don’t think the Broncos count since they hired a defensive head coach.

I doubt Wade and Vic Fangio are compatible.

Vance Joseph probably would have been better served by asking for Wade to stay since they pretty much tried to keep the same defensive philosophy. Wasn’t that the reason for keeping Joe Woods around?

Coordinators usually lose their job when a new head coach is hired, especially when the new head coach is from the same side of the ball as the coordinator.

He's not returning to Denver, it's still Fangio's/Donatell's turn to run our D right now.

LA gave Wade the top-paying contract that he had wanted here in Denver and in return they got three years of these defensive rankings:

          2017: 12th pts, 19th yds
          2018: 20th pts, 19th yds
          2019: 17th pts, 13th yds

Seems on the mediocre side so I'm not surprised that they opted to let a top-dollar contract just expire.

This ESPN article goes into more detail (bolding mine) of how the defense failed:

Rams part ways with defensive coordinator Wade Phillips

Lindsey Thiry ESPN 11:58 AM MT

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- Wade Phillips will not return next season as defensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Rams.

Phillips signed a three-year contract with the Rams after Sean McVay was named coach in 2017. The 72-year-old coordinator said last month amid rumors he would not be retained that he wanted to continue coaching, something he reiterated Monday in confirming reports of his exit.

If the Broncos wanted Phillips back, they would have kept him. Especially since he and Joseph worked together in Houston.
