  • Agent: Ricky Williams set for Dolphins camp

MIAMI - Ricky Williams will report to Dolphins training camp in July, according to his agent, Leigh Steinberg.

Steinberg told the Palm Beach Post that Williams "absolutely" plans to rejoin the Dolphins after retiring prior to last season.

"Ricky's made the decision he wants to play again," Steinberg told the Post.

Steinberg added that Williams' strong rapport with new Miami Dolphins coach Nick Saban is part of the reason why he was contemplating a return.

Steinberg also said that Williams and Saban have had "some steady dialogue in the last 10 days," but would not discuss specifics or detail what would have to transpire in the coming weeks for the NFL's leading rusher in 2002 to rejoin the Dolphins.

"Ricky has expressed a desire and excitement about returning to the Dolphins and playing football this season," Steinberg said. "He's keeping in shape and has been involved in a rigorous training program."

Williams, who led the NFL in rushing in 2002, still owes the Dolphins $8.6 million for breaching his contract by unexpectedly retiring. He also entered into a settlement last month with a woman, agreeing to pay $4,200 a month in support and establish a $300,000 trust fund for a child he fathered.

After quitting the Dolphins, the former Heisman Trophy winner later acknowledged that he failed drug tests and faced a suspension for testing positive three times for marijuana.

If Williams returns, he'd likely have to wait until July to un-retire. Otherwise, he would face a one-year suspension for his violations of the NFL's substance-abuse program. Williams will still face a four-game suspension for failing a third drug test for marijuana last July, just before he retired.

Plus, the Dolphins used the No. 2 overall pick in last month's draft on another running back, Ronnie Brown of Auburn.

Files from the Palm Beach Post were used for this report.

Good post bro....why in the hell would miami want to keep this idiot in the organization? Especially since they just drafted ronnie brown....I lost pretty much all respect for ricky 'becuz i got high' williams when he abandoned his team last yr....I would only takee him back just to trade him.

I agree. Thats a lot of $$ just to split carries between 2 every-down HB's. The problem is they'll have a hard time unloading him much like the Bills & Travis Henry. Nobody really needs a RB right now I guess (shrugs shoulders)...™

I agree...I think it will cause more of a problem for miami then it will a benefit. They need to stick with the RB they just drafted, and trade away that turncoat. JMO.

And as far as no team needing him, i agree with that, but i am sure some team would take him...first team that comes to mind in cleveland, then arizona, then san fran....I think those r very real possibilities. Miami is makin a huge mistake if they keep that a$$wipe.

Cleveland has Droughns but he'd fit nicely with the Cards.

I didnt know cleveland signed droughns, but even still, they could benefit from having williams there PLUS droughns...they need to do whatever they can to get out of the cellar anyway. I do think he'd fit in better in arizona or san fran, but once i thought about it, the whiners dont really have the cap space available for his type of salary(depending on what type of agent he has).....Should be interesting....If miami keeps him, it will be a major hassle for them.....and besides, i thought he owed the dolphin organization 8 million+ ??? Im curious 2 see how things play out.

Well i could see him going to KC if Holmes is out, but I could also see him playing the 8 million off.

Yea, i could see him playin the 8 mil off, but then what kind of contract would he sign with miami? Obviously they're not gonna pay him top dollar, especially if they're expecting top play from him in return for 8 million....I just dont see miami letting him stay there without some sort of deal in their favor.
