  • Raiders: Reasons behind strong rush and weak pass defense

"Oakland: The Raiders dumped the 3-4 defense after one year but still have plenty of defensive linemen on the field.

"Oakland's outside linebackers, Tyler Brayton and Grant Irons, are converted defensive tackles and are built like linemen.

"Irons weighs 285 pounds and Brayton, a former Colorado star, weighs about 280. They are solid players, but they don't run well for outside linebackers.

"Oakland may be better against the run, but teams will exploit its plodding linebackers in the passing game. No way can these guys cover deep."

    Retrieved from the Denver Post.

Looks as if the Raiders' pourous pass defense is no fluke. Look for some high scoring games both by them and against them.

Yeah, I don't think anyone was really sold on them shoring up that pass defense. It doesn't look like that scheme is doing them any favors either. No one is going to stop going after them deep, especially if Moss keeps putting points up on the board. Let's hope Denver can get the offense rolling a little bit before we have to go to that track meet ,er (I mean football game), in Oakland.

Brayton and Irons don't play much pass coverage. They are not a part of the nickel or dime packagaes and even in our base 4-3 they sometimes do not play. Neither played more than 3-4 plays in the second half the other night, and we were still able to stop New England's running attack without them in the game.

The problem is the pass rush. If you think the Broncos pass rush was bad last year it was head and shoulders above the Raiders. They play too much zone defense and can't get pressure on the QB. Rob Ryan (the D coordinator) has not employed aggressive defensive schemes in his first year plus.

I didnt think oaklands run defense was that impressive.. Did you see how awful NEs run blocking was? Corey Dillon was obviously frustrated.. The play that stands out most in that game was NE 4th and inches, and they put in a defensive player at fullback, he leads to the hole where dillon was going, and blows through the whole and blocks noone, dillon is hit for a loss and they turn it over.. The announcers were making a big fuss about the penetration sapp got, but it was pointless because his penetration was 4 yards behind the play..

You have to look no farther than our D-Cordinator Ryan to find why we have such a crazy ass LB situation. He has this obsession with trying to turn DE's into Elephant sized LB's. Hell he cut a guranteed 100+ tackle guy to keep up with his "expirements". Add that to the fact that the word "blitz" is not in his vocabulary, while he mutters loose zone to himself over, and over, and over, and you have the equivilent of an autistic man at the helm of the Raiders D. Oh well, have fun running against our new "6-1" style D.

Oh well, have fun running against our new "6-1" style D... which is very similar to the one Baltimore runs. However, the Raiders don't have the personnel to run it. The Raiders have better DT's than Baltimore, but Baltimore has the ultimate linebacker in Ray Lewis and good DE's in Suggs and Boulware to get pressure on the QB. The one weakness to that style of defense is against the pass. The Raiders will have little help over the middle in coverage and will suffer with slow linebackers against Tony Gonzalez. If Charles Woodson is used to cover Tony Gonzalez, then that just opens up the passing game more for our WR's and TE Kris Wilson. The Chiefs can survive in games where they cannot run the ball as they like.

It's a good thing Jay Cutler was a proven winner in college. Oh wait, nevermind.

It makes you wonder if Ryan is really Buddy's son. Buddy Ryan ran one of the most aggressive defenses in the history of the NFL, and Bob was with New Englad where he learned under Bellicheck and Cronnel. Then he comes to the Raiders where he does nothing aggressive or creative with his schemes. Very few blitzes, and when he does blitz it is easy to see coming. He never stems with his linebackers to fake the blitz. His schemes are all very vanilla.

The Raiders are definately questionable in pass defense, but as I stated earlier that is mostly because they don't get pressure on the QB and they don't confuse offenses with blitzes. I think the secondary is actually pretty strong, but the Chiefs will definately have a favorable matchup with Holmes out of the backfield and with Gonzalez if anyone other than Woodson covers him.

You could definatly wade through his gene-pool. I'm just hoping he discovers how to run a defence this year or else we will be looking for another new D cordinator. Maybe we could re-hire Bresnahan
