Signings: Pats, Caldwell agree to two-year dealESPN.com news services

The Patriots made their first move in free agency by reaching a two-year agreement with Chargers wide receiver Reche Caldwell.

Terms of the deal were unavailable, but the deal, like many given by the Patriots, gives Caldwell a lot of incentives if he does well on the field. After the losses of David Givens and Andre' Davis in free agency, the Patriots were in need of receiving help. They were down to Deion Branch and Bethel Johnson. Troy Brown and Tim Dwight are currently free agents and they are visiting other teams.

The 26-year-old Caldwell had 14 starts in his four seasons with the Chargers. He's caught 76 passes for 950 yards and seven touchdowns during his career. He has the potential to make big plays. During his career, he's had seven receptions of 30 yards or more.

The Chargers made him the 48th selection in the 2002 draft.

Yep, it's a great signing. Caldwell will prove to be an excellent downfield threat. Wait till you see how good he is with the NFL's best QB tossing him perfectly thrown passes. He'll be the next David Givens.

About a year ago I heard the same thing about Tim Dwight, David Terrell, and P.K. Sam. How'd that work out last season?

It worked out great! Thanks for asking. Once again Brady spread the ball around to the open receiver and ended the year with the most passing yards in the NFL.

I wouldn't talk too much smack, being the Patriots are doing 10x more in free agency than the Browncos. It's a nice pickup for the Patriots compared to the trash we have in our receiving core (other than Rod Smith ofcourse)

The Pats have lost alot more than we have. And that was their first signing. They're probably the only team that's done less than us.

And he put up 314 yards on January 14. How'd that work out?

Not that great. The better team did not win. But Caldwell should help to turn things around. Nearly 10% of his career receptions are for 30 yards or more. He'll also be solid returning kick-offs for the Pats.

Well, I think his career stats speak for themself:

Year Team G GS No Yards Avg Lg TD 20+ 40+ FD

So you're saying that he hasn't done anything.

I was just asking because we signed him. Looks like he's going to get a chance to compete for a roster spot this July.

Okay, to get back on topic (sorry about that threadjack):

I have to agree that Tom Brady does a very good job at spreading the ball around. In fact, when the Patriots came to Kansas City he did a very exceptional job. He was so generous that he even shared the ball with Kansas City for 4 of his passes. He completed a pass 3 times to Greg Wesley and 1 time to Sammy Knight.

It's a good thing Jay Cutler was a proven winner in college. Oh wait, nevermind.

You've got to know when to sack em...
