Anthems and Protests ---
While we certainly understand the frustration by fans on all sides of the discussion, we have decided to keep the Broncos Country message boards separate from politics. Recent events have brought the NFL to the forefront of political debates, but due to the highly emotional and passionate discussion it tends to involve, we think it’s best to continue to keep politics and this forum separate. Yes, the forum is meant for discussion, but we’d like to keep that discussion to football as much as possible.
With everything going on in our country, it would be nice to keep our complaints and cheers purely related to football here. If you feel passionately, there are plenty of other outlets available to you to express your opinions. We know this isn’t the most popular decision, but we ask that you respect it.
Thank you for understanding.

Bush jerseys wouldn't sell as much as they would if he was wearing the familiar number 5.
I don't think that is true at all.
There are lots of folks, like me, who might watch their favorite college team, but otehrwise don't know anything about most college players, except what is in the news, and don't know what number they wear.
Plus, there are some who will ALWAYS buy jerseys, and some, like me, who will NEVER buy a jersey.
Why is the number so special that it has to be for a certain position? To the game it means nothing.
To a player that has had it his entire life, it is VERY special. He is #5, and #5 is him, not letting him wear it is ridiculous! And that goes for any player!
Like I said... anal.
Because the rules disallow it.
The argument over whether the rules have any needed basis is seperate than whether a rookie is being absurdly self important by petitioning for a change before he even has a pro practice.

Um, my argument would be this: Randy Moss had one of the top selling jerseys last year...and he was wearing...(HOLY CRAP) A NEW NUMBER!!!!

In essence, he's saying "Hey, I'm Reggie Bush! You're just the National Football League. Ergo, you should waive your rules to accomodate ME!"
WRONG ATTITUDE ROOKIE
Added:
As far as the rule goes, I like that certain positions are designated a range of numbers. When I am watching another team play, I don't know all the players and positions they play. So, I see #56 make a great tackle, I know "damn, that LB is pretty good". I don't want to have to guess the position...

I think you misinterpreted his quotes about the situation.
He openly stated he does not expect the rule to be changed, but he would like to wear #5, and that mean's he would have to appeal.
Bush is a humble person, and in all of his interviews I've seen about the # situation, he has not once stated he thinks the league should let him wear #5.
The NFL made an exception for Keyshawn, because they knew what him wearing 19 would do for jersey sales in a big market like NY.
I personally hope the NFL considers the impact Bush could have in the community like NO considering their losses, and the impact he could have in the NFL, and I think they should make an exception for Bush.
If he does get to wear #5, I'll be first in line for a jersey.

From what I understand Keyshawn got to wear #19 because all the WR numbers were already taken, that's not to say that jersey sales didn't factor into it.
And for the person who said Moss' jersey sales were due to his new number: No, it's because he was on a new team.
Sorry, you can not add yourself to your own ignore list.

The numbers weren't all taken though.
He appealed like Bush did, and jersey sales was a given reason why they let him wear it, considering he was a top pick and in a big market like NY.
Keyshawn wore #3 at USC, and didn't sign until late in training camp when all the #'s were taken.
I wonder where I heard the rumor about the big market and jersey sales thing.
Yea I thought they were all taken. So what happens when this situation comes up again? I know it's unlikely for a team to run out of the numbers 20-49, but it could happen somewhere perhaps, who knows. I just don't think any player deserves special treatment. If a # runs dry at a certain position then of course that has to be solved, but you don't change the rule because it's "special" to bush. I'm sure there were a lot of others who felt their number was special too, they didn't appeal the NFL though, I think it's egotistical.

I seriously hope he doesnt win. I really do like how wrs can wear 10-19 now, but at the same time, 1-9 should only be qbs and kicker/punters. If you allow bush to do it, you are making an exception for why? marketing? thats relaly fair to the rest of the league...
I just hope this doenst become a thing for money.... and if it isnt about the money then it really isnt an issue at all, players have had to change numbers around to fit the restrictions before, and 20-49 is pretty broad so Bush should be able to fit in there somehow.
I do not understand what the big deal it is for him to wear 5. It is only a number.
Not a very strong argument, because you don't account for the fact that he also switched teams. I think that, rather than the number change, is likely the reason for the high number of jersey sales.
.
So is Bush, so why would him changing numbers hurt his sales?

At least for this weekend, at the Saints' three-day mini-camp, former Southern California tailback Reggie Bush is permitted to wear his familiar uniform No. 5.
