I find it kind of funny that Charley Casserly(the texans GM) resigns from his possition after arguably making one of dumbest draft day mistakes in not drafting Reggie Bush. He makes that dumb of a decision and leaves Kubiak to deal with the heat.

Charley Casserly is moving up, not out
Casserly is a highly respected businessman that is headed for the NFL Commissioner's office. Some think he made the best decision drafting Williams instead of Bush. Either way, we won't know for a couple of seasons if the decision was a good one, or not, so I don't think the "dumb" choice has anything to do with his move upward in the NFL business world.

It was a risky move (and thus, stupid). Look at these two scenarios
1) Hypothetical - If they had drafted Bush who was a bust and Williams became a success, they'd be dissapointed but the fans would support them.
2) Reality - If Williams turns out to be a bust and Bush becomes a success, the fans will stop supporting the franchise.
The move was very risky in a business sense. They have introduced a wave of cynacism into the city. Being that I'm in Houston, I hope it turns out for the best.

Of course, if they rated Williams very high, it could be a risk to pass on him. If they traded back with the Jets, there is a chance that he would be gone and they'd have to settle for D'Brickshaw Ferguson.
Really, in the end, considering the circumstances and what the teams around them were likely to do, it wasn't such a bad move to pick Williams where they were. The teams directly behind them weren't in a huge hurry to move up and if they moved back, they would have risked him being gone. Normally, they could also save money by moving back, but when you consider that they negotiated a good deal with Williams anyway, it doesn't seem so bad.
As for the choice of Williams over Bush. I can't complain. In Williams they get a player with great promise at a position of need. In Bush, they pass on a player with slightly greater promise, but who was at a position that is less needed and at a position where it is easier to find good talent.
To me, they made the right choice, but if they could have traded back, the move would be even better. My adopted fan is dogfish

Usually fans of a team that picks a bust are not happy with the organization for it, regardless of what the player did on the college level.Last edited by NJBRONCOSFAN; 05-12-2006, 08:39 AM.

You can't tell me the Jets wouldn't have given them a 2nd rounder, + #4 for that top pick.
No the "points value" doesn't add up, but it isn't about points, it is about what is best for your team .

I heard on ESPN radio today that it was the owners decision to go with willams.
Bush kept insisting on 26mil guaranteed and was involved in the negotiations instead of letting the agent do it.
It pissed off the owner and told Casserly to make the deal with Mario.
Casserly had decided to leave after the owner brought dan reeves in as a consultant.
Just could not go before the draft.
Maybe he is available as a real GM for DEN. One of the top football minds in the game Him and Gibbs built the WAS dynasty the first time.
