    John Welbourn retires from Chiefs

    NFL.com wire reports

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (June 15, 2006) -- Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman John Welbourn announced his retirement.

Welbourn, 30, was acquired from Philadelphia in 2004 after coming into the league as a fourth-round draft choice in 1999.

He was hampered by a knee injury during his first year in Kansas City, and was suspended the first four games of 2005 for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs. This season, he would have competed with newly signed Kyle Turley and veterans Jordan Black and Kevin Sampson at right tackle.

"I decided to retire on my own terms rather than somebody else's," Welbourn told The Associated Press. "It was awesome playing in the NFL. I got to play with a lot of great athletes, Will Shields, Willie Roaf, to name a few. I've been playing football for 16 years and it's a little scary to think I won't be playing any more. But at the same time, it's exciting to think I'll be starting a whole new chapter in my life."

Welbourn, who has nearly completed work on a graduate degree in education, said he planned to enroll in law school. He said he would be filing the paperwork on his retirement with the NFL office.

"I discussed this with the Chiefs a couple of weeks ago," said Welbourn, who participated in last month's minicamp but has been unhappy that the Chiefs would not renegotiate terms of his contract.

A Chiefs spokesman said the team had received a fax from Welbourn's representative indicating "his desire to pursue his studies." Kansas City plans to keep him on the active roster for now, in case he changes his mind.

He was primarily a left guard in five years at Philadelphia, where he played in three NFC championship games.

"It's weird thinking I won't be playing football anymore," he said. "Most guys play until they can't play anymore. But I feel good physically and I've been playing well. I'm leaving on a high note."

I don't think this is a big deal for the Chiefs. If it had been Roaf or Shields, that would be different. But Welbourn was never a key piece of their offensive line.

Well, he's not Roaf or Shields, but he was an effective starter in the NFL.

Retiring at 30. That's young for an o-lineman.

But with the injury and drugs, maybe it is time to go.

Well, it doesn't exactly help them either. Welbourne was a valuable player who backed up Brian Waters and Will Shields last year and didn't suck.

No, he wasn't a pro-bowl caliber player, but losing him didn't help the Chiefs either with the depth on their OL.

Considering that their starters are all older than Methusela it's nice to have a decent backup to spell them during the long grind of the season.

Notice that the team is keeping his roster spot open in hopes of changing his mind. He's a valuable part of their offense and will be missed. Continuty on the O-line is important and that line is the backbone of the Chiefs. Yes, they'll have other guys who can fill in, but they won't be better than he was.

I think Turly is better than Welbourn. I heard on the radio that Kyle was most likely to start over Welbourn. Now yes i agree it hurts depth but without injuries i think the line should be better with Turly,

LMAO.................I heard that interview too.................On Rome, right? Turley will never play Tackle again. I like Turley, but his comback will be shortlived.

Give it up.................He heard it on a talk show................It's already branded into his brain that Turley will be just fine at Tackle.

Um no i heard it on the local radio show that Turly finally signed and gave into playing OT for the Chiefs because we didnt need a TE

Sampson and Black are why we lost alot of games last year. They are more than capable back-ups but i dont think they belong starting over any of our guys.

you are right lady, your chiefs will indeed miss him, he was an under-rated part of your offense. . . . if gerald sowell starts, he isn't half the lead blocker richardson was-- better receiver maybe, but he won't open holes the way richardson did. . . . fullbacks get less and less credit every year, but what they do is still valuable-- ask shaun alexander or LT. . . .
