  • --- New NFL Ball Rule ? ---

--- Last March, the NFL owners voted to pass 15 rule changes recommended by the competition committee ---

--- We know about most of the high profile changes such as the “Chad Johnson” rule, and the “Roy Williams” rule, in addition, replay will now review down by contact, and rushing defensive players can’t hit the QB below the knees, etc ---

    --- http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2389062

--- Last weekend, I was listening to ESPN Radio and they mentioned that next season, the QB’s will be allowed to mush up the football like they used to do ---

--- Some QB’s would smash the nose of the ball into the floor, with their foot on the opposite nose of the football ---

--- Each QB would have his own pre-game ritual of smashing and roughing up the balls before the game, until he got the feel and grip he liked and felt most comfortable handling the football ---

--- This is all I could find concerning NFL rules of the football:

“The home club shall have 36 balls for outdoor games and 24 for indoor games available for testing with a pressure gauge by the referee two hours prior to the starting time of the game to meet with League requirements. Twelve (12) new footballs, sealed in a special box and shipped by the manufacturer, will be opened in the officials’ locker room two hours prior to the starting time of the game. These balls are to be specially marked with the letter "k" and used exclusively for the kicking game.”

The official source for NFL news, video highlights, fantasy football, game-day coverage, schedules, stats, scores and more.

--- Has anyone else heard of the rule change which will allow QBs to “mess” around with their Game balls prior to the Game like before ?

--- If so, this will become an important factor for QBs performance, especially with the extreme variations of weather during the course of the NFL season ---

    --- ?

I recall hearing about something like this before the whole CBA mess... But because of that mess this change just got overlooked I guess.

--- Perhaps it has gone under the radar because of Chad and Roy ?

I am horribly upset by the rule that defensive players cant hit QBs below the knee. That is the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard. Rushers are diving in, hoping to catch something to alter the throw. Defenders are also often blocked into the QB, or blocked so that the foot is all they can grab. The fact that holding is called only about 10% of the time already makes rushing the QB very difficult, so giving these guys yet aniother restriction is just ludicrous

          Thanks AZ for information.

Allowing the QBs to mess around with the football will make a difference in many of the QB's performances........in my opinion. It could be as little as grip or psychological difference.

Dave Krieg would have love this rule. Wasn't it Dave that had the small hands and used to fumble and drop the balls as a QB? He may even hold the record for fumbles by a QB.

--- I think Dave also has the record for playing QB on the most NFL teams ---

--- However, the current rule is a relatively new one, I believe it came with the "K" balls ---

--- QBs used to be able to before, during Dave's time ---

--- Now the League is going to let the QBs do it again --- to some extent ---

--- I just think that http://www.nfl.com/fans/rules/ has not updated the new rules that will be in effect for the 2006 season ---

                Thanks for the read . . .

They haven't quite destroyed the game yet,

so they'll keep working at it until they do.

What I heard was that it was a 'Brady/Manning' rule, where they get to provide their own balls, rather than the current situation where the home team provides the balls.

The visiting teams will be able to bring their own balls, brought about because Brady and Peyton have issues with the balls they've used in away games.

That was what I heard a few months ago, but haven't heard anything further since then.

                            Cheers.

And to top it all off, this mostly stems from the fact that balls used in Denver are harder to use due to the altitude affecting the firmness! Ha! It's all our fault!
