Draft Pick Hagan Agrees to Terms
    July 28, 2006
[Sun-Sentinel] Dolphins third-round draft choice Derek Hagan agreed to a four-year contract Friday afternoon, a source said.

    No financial details were available.

The only members of the Dolphins' 2006 draft class who haven't reached agreement on contracts are free safety Jason Allen (first round) and defensive tackle Rodrique Wright (seventh).

Dolphins players are reporting to training camp today, with the first practice at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at team headquarters in Davie. Allen and Wright are not allowed to report until having signed contracts.

Its that obvious Remember I live in Boston and only hear how great they are 24/7. I respect them but after a while it is sickening. It is like they never lose a game. Some not all Boston fans are so jaded it is not even funny.

        so for you Go fins

The best wide receiver in PAC 10 history means nothing to me. And, since he's fighting for a number four or three spot, it obvioulsy means jack to the Dolphins too. That, or the Dolphins are just friggin LOADED. I think they are....LOADED.

                          Hagan exceeding expectations

                          DOLPHINS | DEREK HAGAN
Rookie is exceeding expectationsAlthough third-round draft choice Derek Hagan is trying to earn a role on the team, he already is earning his teammates' respect.
                          BY BARRY JACKSON
                          [email protected]
On the day when first-round choice Jason Allen finally reported to camp, third-round pick Derek Hagan continued his persistent push for the No. 3 receiver's job.

Any lingering concerns about Hagan's poor Senior Bowl week -- when he dropped several balls in practices -- have been quickly cast aside. Hagan has been consistently impressive throughout camp, and teammates have noticed.

''Derek's going to be a heck of a player -- I can honestly say that,'' backup quarterback Joey Harrington said Tuesday. ``He works extremely hard. He's very polished in what he does. He's very precise. He runs great routes.''

Receiver Chris Chambers has been effusive about Hagan. ``I told Derek he's probably a couple years ahead of where I was when I came in. He's a lot more polished. He's a good route runner. I think the team really got a good player.''

Hagan on Tuesday initially downplayed the importance of winning the job against Wes Welker and Kelly Campbell. But in a private moment, he conceded, ``Anyone would like that job.''

On the depth chart released Monday, Hagan was No. 2 behind Marty Booker at one receiver spot, with Welker No. 2 behind Chambers at the other. But this battle won't be resolved until preseason games play out, beginning Saturday against Jacksonville at Dolphin Stadium.

Though Campbell has blazing speed and Welker returns as the incumbent, the Dolphins are intrigued by Hagan's combination of size (6-2) and speed.

Asked what he's looking for in a third receiver, coach Nick Saban volunteered the names of Welker and Hagan. ''Wes is really a good slot player, and that's beneficial to our team, and we use him in that role,'' he said. ``Derek Hagan is really a good all-around receiver who can still play some in the slot.

``Basically, what he's given us is better depth at all three positions as well as a backup player to play in the slot. The big picture is Derek Hagan we hope can develop into a better third receiver, outside receiver, and could still play in the slot.''

Hagan, who noted he didn't play much slot receiver at Arizona State, said lining up at the position could pose problems for opponents because of his height.

''It's a great opportunity for me working against linebackers and safeties,'' he said. ``Most linebackers cannot keep up with receivers in the slot. Sometimes, that can mess a whole defense up, just putting a big receiver in the slot, and running around and trying to work the middle. The good receivers play all the positions.''

Before Senior Bowl week, Hagan said his hands were ''never'' a problem at Arizona State, where he caught a Pacific-10-record 258 passes.

''I just had a bad week at the Senior Bowl, not doing the things I normally did at Arizona State,'' he said. ``It's something I learned from. . . . Whenever I step on the field, I'm always playing with a little chip on my shoulder.''

Hagan, a Northridge, Calif., native whose favorite athlete growing up was then-49ers receiver Jerry Rice, appreciates the counsel Chambers, Booker and Welker give him.

''Whenever I make a mistake, they're always there for me,'' he said. ``First, they ask me what do I see. Then they may correct it. I take the advice.''

Derek Hagan is the second or third best reciver in PAC 10 history. If Jarrett plays 4 years (unlikely), Hagan may drop out of the top 5 in most catagories, depending on a bunch of factors.

Troy Walters of Stanford caught more balls for more yards for a career, and holds the records for most yards in a game, and most yards in a season for receivers.

The only record Walters doesn't hold is career TD's, held by Ken Margerum (1977-1980) who caught 32 TD's (out of 148 career receptions).

The most frequent TD catcher in PAC 10 history was Kevin Wiliams (1977-1980) of USC. He went to the house 35% of the time (an NCAA record). In 1978, he only caught 17 passes, but 10 were touchdowns! He had 24 TD's in only 68 total catches.

So unless Walters signed with the Dolphins, and since Williams and Margerum are probably pushing 50, your claim is a touch hyperbolic, no?

Everybody's gotta elevate from the norm...
