  • Colt Trade 2nd Round Pick for Anthony MacFarland

:brick: That's definately going to help their run Defense :brick:

Colts acquire Bucs' McFarland for second-round pick

The Indianapolis Colts made a strong move Tuesday to improve their run defense, acquiring defensive tackle Anthony McFarland in a trade-deadline deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for a 2007 second-round draft pick.

The NFL has confirmed that the McFarland trade was the only deal made before Tuesday's 4 p.m. ET trade deadline, ESPN.com's John Clayton reported.

McFarland, 6 feet and 300 pounds, has spent the last six seasons as a starter on the Bucs' line. Considered one of the NFL's top run defenders at the tackle position, he helped Tampa Bay rank in the top 10 in the league in total defense during each of his seven seasons with the team.

The Colts rank 32nd in the NFL against the run this season, having allowed 166.8 yards per game. They allowed 110.1 yards per game last season.

McFarland entered this season with 292 career tackles, 20 sacks, three forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries. He has played in 93 career games with 79 starts. He started all five games this season for the Bucs recording six tackles and two assists.

Meanwhile, the Bucs moved immediately to fill McFarland's roster spot by signing veteran cornerback Phillip Buchanon, who less than 24 hours before was released by the Houston Texans.

Buchanon, a former first-round draft choice, signed a one-year contract with the Bucs late Tuesday afternoon.

The deal reunites Buchanon with Bucs general manager Bruce Allen, who was a top executive in Oakland's front office when the Raiders chose Buchanan with the 17th overall selection in the 2002 draft. The short-term contract will provide Buchanon the opportunity to perhaps regain the form of his early career, when it appeared that he was emerging as one of the league's top young cornerbacks, and then enter the unrestricted free agent market next spring.

Tampa Bay officials have been seeking to add a veteran corner and had worked the phones over the last few days in trade discussions with other clubs. But it's believed the Bucs never came close to making a deal for a cornerback and, when Buchanon became available Monday evening, they focused on him.

Bucs starting cornerback Brian Kelly, who the team had been shopping in casual trade talks, has missed three games with "turf toe." And nickel corner Juran Bolden, despite not missing any games, played hurt through the first month of the season.

Imagine when Simon is at full strength?

    Mathis and Freeney at DE
and Simon + Macfarland in the middle = Great D-line.

Great pickup for the Colts, even though the buccaneers didn't get a bad deal neither, 2 round pick? i'll take that...good trade on both sides.

i don't know if simon will ever be at full strength again-- it's been rumored that he has a degenerative knee condition, though i don't know if it's true or not. . . but in any case, i was bummed when i saw this a little while ago-- not only becuase it'll help the colts, but because WE should have gone after him, lol. . . don't know if we could have afforded his salary or not, but if it was possible he sure would have helped out our very mediocre D-line. . . he's an impact player, and is a solid DT who can two-gap and stuff the run, or penetrate to disrupt plays in the backfield and collapse the pocket. . . . from what i understand, he hasn't been playing up to his standard so far this year, but he still would have been a nice addition. . . . oh well. . . .

We still have to play the Colts too

Either way, our Run D in the middle has been fine, IMO. Myers and Warren have beasted so far. They aren't all-pro, but I'm satisfied.

Of course he would be an improvement, but I'd like more of a pass rushin DE, which we can hopefully get this offseason, either in the draft or in the FA.

Btw, NOBODY on the Bucs D has played to standard at all so far.

Ronde Barber seems to be sucking.

Brian Kelly is being mentioned in trade talks.

How many sacks has Simeon Rice gotten?

Jermaine Phillips has been a Michael Lewis in coverage (see the Saints game for what I mean about Lewis).

Michael Lewis has also been sucking this year. I think he just got benched too in place of two other rotating safeties.

Will Allen has also been lack luster, in the shadow of Dwight Smith/Dexter Jackson and what they brought to the D.

Derrick Brooks has been atleast still at the same level as usual, but that's about it.

i'm in FULL agreement that i'd rather have a top pass rushing DE-- but i do think if we added another DT who has the combination of size and quickness that warren does, we could do more in terms of letting one of them penetrate and shoot gaps, and improve our interior pass rush. . . . . we have been running more loops and stunts this year, but there's always room for improvement. . . .

We don't have nearly the need at DT that Indy does, therefore I would have been a bit upset had we traded a 2 and poured more money into a position where it's not needed.

Our top 3 guys are pretty darn solid, and they do what is asked of them with ease.

McFarland, as an aging player with a bloated salary, doesn't warrant giving up a 2nd in my eyes. I'd much rather have an additional WR or DE prospect from the next draft than 2 1/2 years of Anthony McFarland (signed through '08).

I think he's going to have more success with the pass rushing and run stopping games with Dwight Freeney, Raheem Brock/Simon (when/if healthy), and Robert Mathis opening plays for him, and he should excel there, IMO.

It's true the pryce, erm price, would kill us, but I agree with you for the most part.

Good move by the Colts. BTW, it's rumored Indy will release Simon at the end of the year.

great pick up by the colts.. this should help their sad run defense, and just give them one more bullet to put in their belt. Nice move on their part!!

good move by both teams teh bucs need to use his salery to get some new/younger players and the 2nd round pick is the right value for him.
